Will you Choose Champagne or Lemonade ?
As a small business owner, I recently received an enquiry from a company looking to organise monthly activities for their employees. Great idea! I promptly sent over my corporate brochure showcasing various chocolate workshops.
Their response? "We love it but can you offer it at a 33% discount."
My heart sank. That word—"discount"—suggests people don't truly value what I'm offering or the time I invest. And honestly? It makes me frustrated, and here's why:
The reality of small business ownership:
• We aren't millionaires
• We handle everything ourselves (calls, cleanup, marketing, purchasing)
• Behind every workshop is years of expertise and passion
• What looks like "just a few hours" actually involves:
- Packing equipment and ingredients
- Travel time and costs
- Setup and cleanup
- Years of research and skill development
- Equipment maintenance and replacement
For most on-site workshops, what clients see as "2 hours" is actually a full day's commitment from me:
1. Packing materials
2. Travelling to the venue
3. Setting up workstations
4. Tempering chocolate on-site
5. Delivering an engaging, informative and fun experience
6. Cleaning everything
7. Travelling home
8. Washing equipment and aprons
9. Restocking supplies
My pricing reflects these realistic costs and time investments. Could I remove activities to reduce the price? I could. But that would compromise the quality I'm committed to delivering. I want every participant to experience a TRULY exceptional chocolate workshop with diverse techniques and interesting tastings.
So clients have a choice: Enjoy a meticulously crafted, professionally executed chocolate experience (the champagne option) or seek out a stripped-down version elsewhere (the lemonade option).
I'm proudly offering champagne.
What are you choosing?
