Hidden Figures of the South West showcases over 200 impactful portraits, honouring individuals in under-recognised professions across the South West of England. These professions include conservationists, traditional artisans, artists, and more.

With camera in hand, photographer Caitlin Pharoah has climbed barnacle-covered rocks to witness seaweed harvesters at work, explored the complex ecosystems of mushroom farms, and listened to the quiet wisdom of those preserving ancient crafts.

Each ‘Hidden Figure’ has written the narrative that accompanies their portrait. The images and words reveal the human stories behind the professions, providing a layered understanding of lives often overlooked.

Each year, skills and knowledge passed down through millennia disappear before they can be retained for the future. Together, we can change the ending of this story.

Yesterday evening, I had the honour of being the closing speaker at Exeter Library's first PechaKucha .

A PechaKucha is a presentation where a speaker presents a series of 20 slides, each displayed for 20 seconds, resulting in a 6-minute and 40-second presentation.

The result was an evening of snappy and diverse presentations, where you couldn't predict what was coming next. A supportive audience and wonderful hosts made for a great experience for all!

Hidden Figures of the South West is a passion-fuelled, self-funded project built by a determined one-woman team — and it’s only been possible thanks to the support of a growing community of contributors, craft guilds, and champions of local culture.
I’ve poured everything into this: from sending out the very first email enquiry, to booking my 200th portrait shoot, to reliving my college days to design a 500-page book. I’ve travelled thousands of miles, applied for every grant under the sun, and adopted a “don’t ask, don’t get” mindset to keep it all moving.

The truth? Creative projects like this one are rarely easy — but they’re always worth it. And now, I need your help to bring this next chapter to life. With your support, we can celebrate and preserve the incredible people and crafts that make the South West so unique.
