'Road rider of the weekend' from Jack's road ride, deservedly goes to Ben.

Ben, as seen on the BMW G 310 GS had been without a bike for over a decade. Then just a little over a month ago. He decided to get back into motorcycling. And stumbled across our event whilst searching for adventure motorcycle events in 2024.

Ben took part in all the road rides across the weekend. Rode up Devil's Staircase and Devil's Elbow without issue. Both of which aren't novice-friendly. Despite having never ridden off-road before. He thoroughly enjoyed the 5km section of gravel road on Sunday's route. As can be seen from his grin.

He even sped off with the KTM 950 and Honda 250. Both of which were fitted with trail tyres and himself only on adventure/road tyres!

By the end of the weekend, he had learnt to relax his grip on the bars. And was more confident and comfortable dealing with loose surfaces.

A big thank you once again to all those who came this weekend. Especially to our traders - Sportax Racing, Force Motorcycles, Hit The Trails, Lee Walters Off Road Training School, the TRF and everyone else who gave up their time to help out behind the scenes.

On the whole, it was a successful 1st ever Traction. However, we have a few creases to iron out. And bits which could be improved upon.

But please let us know your feedback and suggestions. And we'll aim to develop upon them for next year 😊

It's with deep regret that we have to announce. Special guests Chris Marsh, of Canned-Ham. Has sadly had to withdraw from attending this weekend.

After speaking with Chris, he's informed us that due to unforseen circumstances. He has had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from this weekend. Which is a real blow, as he would have been a great asset to have with us.

However, we still hope to promote the CanAm ethos despite his absence. And we wish him all the best and hope to have him back with us next year.

Road Rides & Trail Rides

Please familiarise the following info. If you are joining any of the road rides and trail rides.

Please arrive for all rides:
- Prior to the departure time.
- With a full tank of fuel.
- Empty bladder .
- And a reliable bike (was reliable last time you used it).
As any delay will impact on timings.

We will be implementing the Drop-Off system and Checking Mirrors.

Drop-Off System

- Ride Leader - Position 1, no one to overtake them. Always allow the Ride Leader to pull away from rest stops first.
- Back Marker - Sweeps at the back - usually fastest accelerating bike.
- Rider in position 2 stops at each junction to waymark. A couple of riders may have to stop on more complex junctions to waymark.
- Waymarkers to use their arms to give indications of which way to go.
- The riders waymarking the junction then rejoin the back of the run. But in front of the Back Marker.
- As riders at the front stop to waymark junctions, the riders in middle naturally progress to the front of the pack and become the waymarkers at the upcoming junctions.

Checking Mirrors

- To keep the pack tight, please remain vigilent and check your mirrors (when safe to do so) to ensure we don't loose anyone behind.
- If you loose visial sighting of the rider behind you. Then slow down and if necessary stop if safe to do so.
- If you slow down, the rider in front should also observe this in their mirrors and slow down/stop aswell. Thus the front of the pack will slow down and stop until the back of the pack has rejoined.

Other Points:
- If there is a problem (you or someone else). Give thumbs down πŸ‘Ž If someone gives a thumbs down. Everyone is to repeat thumbs down to acknoledge to everyone that there is a problem. Do not proceed or stop when safe to do so.
- If all is good, give a thumbs up πŸ‘ Everyone is to repeat thumbs up to confirm. The ride leader will only depart once thumbs up has been acknoledged by everyone.
- If you need petrol. Point or gesture to your petrol tank.
- If you have a problem and it is safe to do so. Use your horn to engage the attention of other riders. Or give a thumbs down πŸ‘Ž eg. bike problem or lost a rider behind and slow down or stop when safe to do so.
- The Ride Leader will ride smoothly/accelerate slowly, to allow riders at the back to catch up if the pack becomes spread out.

Mobile phone numbers to be handed out at the start of the ride in the event of a problem.

Finally to wrap up. The details of our B Route.

As previously mentioned, Route B has some road bike/sports bike unfriendly sections. So depending on what bikes are in attendance. We may run this route on Saturday. So any purely road-based bikes can join Route A on Sunday. If they are taking part in the Explorer on Saturday.

Route A is purely tarmac. However, both routes are predominantly back roads. Best suited to adventure-style, tight manoeuvring lighter weight bikes.

⭐️ Special Guest: Gary Wigston ⭐️

I left the Army after 24 years in 2008 having learnt a great deal about the Can Ams (which I passed my test on), the 500 Armstrong which I did many miles on as a despatch rider in Germany. I also rode the bikes in Army competitions and was fortunate to represent the Army at the International Six Days Enduro on 3 occasions – Although I rode a Honda in these competitions. As the Armstrong 500 was phased out we received the Harley Davidson 350. Good news with electric starters and disk brakes but always seemed a little underpowered. This was great for motorcycle courses as I didn’t have to keep kick starting all the students’ bikes! I was always fascinated with extracting a bit more power out of the 350 engine experimenting with different carburettors all the way to 500e engines.

After I left the Army I built a 350 Harley Davidson up from a box of parts as a bit of a hobby and was introduced to the MT riders forum. It was great to meet such a broad spectrum of decent people with one common interest – old army bikes. I was also pleased to see the bikes being put to good use in their β€˜retirement’. Through links with the club (www.mtridersclub.co.uk) I got to hear about Sportax and am now the very proud third owner.
