Hello 👋🏼
I’ve been hibernating over Christmas and new year but, the snow has melted and I’m back at work in the field this week. I thought I’d follow Rebecca ‘s lead and do a little introduction post…
I’m Kate, the face behind Durham Blooms. Up until now, I’ve been growing and selling from my generous garden in Shotley Bridge but, last October, I took on a field to expand my growing space. I rent just under an acre from a local farmer and I’m currently setting the field up ready for the flower season ahead. I do a bit of everything, producing flowers for seasonal weddings, funerals and other events, as well as gift bouquets and subscription flowers to brighten your homes. I work with florists, producing flowers for their shops and events - I will have more capacity for wholesale customers once the field is up and running so, if you’re a florist that’s interested in buying beautiful, seasonal, locally grown flowers, please get in touch!
I couldn’t do all this without the help of my wonderful husband, Doug. He has absolutely no interest in flower farming, yet still spends all his weekends shovelling compost, building sheds and setting up irrigation systems. He’s my biggest cheerleader and the reason I’m here, doing what I love. We have a 9 month old daughter, Lucy, who’s funny, sweet and very determined. I can’t wait to get her involved in the flowers more, as she gets older.
Now for 3 facts about me that you may not know:
✨In my previous life, I was a hospital doctor for almost a decade. I worked in elderly care, with a special interest in end of life care, which is probably why I’m so passionate about creating beautiful funeral flowers with true meaning.
✨ Before I met Doug, I lived in Malaysia for a year, working as a university lecturer. I’ve travelled all over Asia but, Malaysia will always have a little piece of my heart.
✨ At the beginning of 2020, I spent some time in Borneo, training to be a professional scuba diver. I love diving but haven’t had the chance to get back in the water since.
As you can probably tell, my life has changed quite a lot in recent years but, I honestly have never been happier!
