🌿 It’s all in the detail 🌿

I always like my wreaths to be natural and a bit wild and this has been my favourite of the season so far. It went to its new home this afternoon - I’m always a tiny bit sad to say goodbye to my favourites, but also happy that they get to be enjoyed by my lovely customers.

Thank you so much to everyone that’s placed a wreath order with me this year! My order books are now closed and I’ll be taking a bit of much needed rest after the last wreaths go out next week.

I’m planning even bigger and better things for my Christmas offerings in 2025 so, watch this space!

Today is free greenhouse day!!

My brother in law and his fiancé bought a house this summer with a big greenhouse in the garden that they don’t want… cue me very kindly offering to take it off their hands! I’m very grateful that they said yes!

Today is the day that it will be dismantled and moved to its new home in the flower field. It won’t be reassembled just yet - we still have a lot of work to do to get the site that it will sit on ready - but it’s another step forward in field prep! It’s going to be an absolute mission but, once it’s set up, it will mean having a lot more space for propagation which will be vital when the full field is in production 🌿🌸

✨ Progress ✨

I’m forcing myself to celebrate the small steps forward. With no childcare help and Doug and I mostly setting up the flower field on our own, progress has been much slower than I would like. I’ll admit that I’m not the most patient of people so, I’ve found this really frustrating.

My Dad came up this weekend to help finish off the first shed, and here it is in all its glory (picture 2)! We also started marking out the first section of beds. So I’m celebrating these little bits of progress! And giving a little shout out to the men in my life who have absolutely no interest in flower farming but show their love and support for me by tirelessly working to help me realise my dreams ❤️

Doug took the drone up yesterday in the beautiful autumn light to get some shots of the field for planning purposes (picture 1) and captured some of the beauty of the County Durham countryside too (picture 3).

🎄Christmas 🎄

With all the work we’re doing on the field, (and the baby, of course!) we’ve decided not to run wreath making workshops this year. However, we still have made-to-order wreaths and door swags on offer, all made with gorgeous, locally grown, seasonal foliage 🌿

This year’s offerings are as follows:
✨ Festive Half-Wreath (picture 1)
✨ Festive Door Swag (picture 2)
✨ Wild Winter Wreath (picture 3)
✨ Full Christmas Wreath (picture 4)

All of these can be ordered now through our website - link in bio

For John, who lived in many different places but always kept a beautiful garden 🌿

This was a really lovely funeral to flower, with so many elements that held meaning and memories for the family. Some of the family members came, armed with a bucket of special bits and pieces cut from the family garden, to help me finish off the arrangements - a wonderful couple of hours spent with lovely people that clearly adored John.

The photos aren’t the best but, the afternoon was perfect 🥰

✨Exciting News✨

This feels like an incredibly long time coming but, I’m very excited to announce that we now have a field!!

We’re renting a small field (just less than an acre) from a local farmer and will be spending the autumn/winter months prepping it for the 2025 season. All with a baby in tow…

Are we completely mental? Quite possibly.
Are we exhausted just thinking about all the work ahead? Yes we are.
Are we going to do it anyway? Absolutely!

Expect more updates on what we’re up to and lots more flowery content as we massively expand our growing space! As well as a lot of mud, sweat and probably some tears along the way!

This growing season has been tough - having to deal with terrible weather, armies of slugs and other pests, all alongside looking after a newborn! So, we’ve made the decision to end our flower season a little early this year as we, and the flowers, are all rather tired!

We’ll have our Christmas offerings up on our website in the next couple of weeks and we have some other very exciting news to announce shortly so, watch this space 👀🙊

*Please note that this will not affect any orders that have already been placed. We just aren’t taking any more fresh flower orders this season, apart from funeral flowers.

For Kathleen who travelled to York yesterday to rest beside her late husband ❤️

I had to think outside the box for this one. The family wanted to be able to give the flowers to family and friends after the service but I was worried about them lasting well in the warm weather we’ve been having recently using my usual de-constructable casket spray method. I ended up using a mix of damp moss and hidden jam jars for the base so that people could take home jam jars of flowers at the end of the funeral. It worked really well! I love the challenge of meeting people’s needs for such an important occasion ❤️

If you too would like natural, seasonal flowers for a loved one’s funeral, please get in touch via our website - link in bio.

You win some, you lose some…

Juggling the flowers with looking after a newborn baby is hard! (Who’d have thought?!) I never quite got round to supporting my autumn sown snapdragons and they completely collapsed 🙈 their stems were too wonky to sell but look gorgeous in this ridiculously opulent arrangement that’s now taking pride of place on my dining table! I don’t usually get to enjoy my own flowers like this so it’s a bit of a treat 🌸

This week is British Flowers Week 🌸

An awful lot of love and care goes into producing each stem that we use in our work here at Durham Blooms. Our flowers are lovingly grown in our cutting garden in Shotley Bridge - no chemicals, no air miles, just beautiful flowers.

If you’d like to order some beautiful, locally grown flowers to celebrate British Flowers Week (or any week!), please check out our offerings on our website - link in bio - or just send us a message 😊
