⚓️ Wreck of the PS Rhos Neigr, Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

After sinking on almost 117 years ago, on July 20th 1908, having struck a rock near the Little Orme whilst ferrying passengers to Blackpool from Llandudno, The wreckage of the PS Rhos Neigr is today still visible at very low spring tides.

This paddle steamer had a two-cylinder oscillating compound engine, with cylinders mounted on trunnions that oscillated to directly drive the paddle wheels. In this compound engine, steam expanded first in a high-pressure cylinder, then in a larger low-pressure cylinder for increased efficiency.

An air pump, driven by an intermediate crank on the paddle shaft, maintained a vacuum in the condenser, reducing back pressure and boosting power.

The condenser, a heat exchanger, cooled exhaust steam with seawater, recycling the condensed water to the boiler to minimize freshwater use.

This compact, simple design, common in the mid-19th century, was later outclassed by triple-expansion engines for larger ships.
