Cheylesmore Manor House

Cheylesmore Manor House The remnants of a medieval royal palace in Coventry now the perfect venue for weddings! It is thought that it was built for the Earl of Arundel in 1237.

The remnants of a medieval royal palace in Coventry city centre, the gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor is at the heart of the city on New Union Street. The magnificent timber building it is one of the few remnants of Coventry's rich and important heritage. The building used to be the only unfortified royal palace outside London and is now better known as the Register Office, being the oldest building

in the country to hold that function. By 1320 it had passed to Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, along with the lavish Cheylesmore Park that surrounded it. Her son Edward, the Black Prince, took possession of it after her. It was described as 'somewhat in ruin' in the 16th century and suffered from Coventry's lack of royal support in the Civil War period. The building we know today is, in fact, only the gatehouse and parts of two cross wings to the original manor house. After restoration work, the building opened as a register office in 1968.

The Anglican Chapel is Grade II listed and was built in 1847 of Hartshill stone in a Norman style. The Chapel has undergone extensive restoration and is now beautifully equipped with underfloor heating, bronze casement double glazing and all the facilities to accommodate a range of events, meetings and ceremonies.

The Chapel sits in the stunning location of London Road Cemetery, opened in 1847. In the mid-Victorian era, as city centre churchyards became overcrowded, carefully designed and landscaped cemeteries on the outskirts of cities became increasingly popular. As well as being natural environments often full of exotic trees and plants, many also displayed beautiful architecture designed by renowned architects of the day.

London Road Cemetery is no exception. It was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, renowned architect, gardener and Member of Parliament for Coventry who notably worked extensively at in the gardens at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and designed Crystal Palace in London.

Nowadays the Chapel is an Approved Premises for Marriages and Civil Partnerships.

❤ DRAPERS HALL ❤

After more than 30 years shut, this impressive Regency hall in the heart of historic Coventry has been repurposed and reinvigorated as a venue for marriages.

The Grade II* listed Drapers’ Hall is one of the few Regency buildings in the city and was built in 1831-2 as the headquarters of the Coventry Drapers’ Guild.

The current building is the third Drapers’ Hall on the site, replacing the previous medieval and post-medieval buildings which the wealthy Guild of Drapers constructed as places to do business, to socialise and to hold events.

Designed by Thomas Rickman and H W Hutchinson, the current building is in Greek Revival style and consists of a series of grand ceremonial spaces lit by rooflights: a Ballroom, Tea Room and Reading Room. Each of these has decorative plaster ceilings and chimneypieces. In the basement the original kitchens, plate store, wine store and sculleries survive with all their fittings. Parts of the basement were also used as air raid shelters in both World Wars.
