Last week, our Scientific Update team came together for a day dedicated to personal and professional growth. We also had the pleasure of welcoming our two new team members, Bec and Caroline, who you'll get to meet in the coming weeks!

The day kicked off with a productive team-building session, where we focused on working on the business rather than in it. The brainstorming led to some exciting new ideas and ways to improve our work. The evening was equally rewarding, filled with networking, engaging conversations, and connecting with our colleagues and their partners.

It was a successful and fulfilling day—proud of such an amazing team! 😊

A recent paper by Pfizer's Groton team outlines the development of a robust process for the late-stage chemoselective saponification of an aryl ester in the GLP-1R agonist danuglipron, an orally bioavailable molecule in clinical development for Type-2 diabetes. This process overcomes challenges such as competing hydrolysis of a benzonitrile substituent and an acid-labile oxetane ring. The team optimized the process using TBD in aqueous MEK and later improved it with K3PO4 in a TFE/water mixture, achieving higher yields and purity. This innovative approach highlights significant advancements in process development and impurity control.

⛰Scientific Update Reaches Peak in the Morocco Atlas 2024⛰

A team of 26 intrepid Bristol university students decided to take on the challenge of trekking 60 KM over six days to the summit of the highest peak in North Africa Mount Toubkal at 4,167m above sea level reaching its iconic triangular summit post.

The team chose to undertake this challenge in July to raise funds for Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end of life charity. Marie Curie supports people affected by any terminal illness, such as dementia (including Alzheimer’s), motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, heart diseases and advanced cancer.

Every five minutes someone in the UK dies without the care and support they need.
The average age that someone experiences their first bereavement is at 20 years old, meaning that for many people across the UK this may happen whilst at University. With vital fundraising challenges such as these Marie Curie can support them through it.

The whole Morocco Atlas team to date has raised over £40,000.00 collectively. Matthew, the son of one our Scientific Update Directors Hannah May took part and raised a whopping £1000 which we price matched to raise him up to £2000 for such a worthwhile charity.

Matt stated “It was an incredible experience, a real once in a life time achievement, and I am incredibly grateful for all the generous donations we have received. If anyone would like to donate our just giving page is still open https://www.justgiving.com/page/matt-may-123456?utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=page%2Fmatt-may-123456&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=pfp-share every little bit helps to support this awesome charity”.
