I think January is the perfect month to invest in my Sustainable Funeral Flowers course. Although you may not have lots of flowers at the moment, the majority of the techniques in the course can be created using seasonal foliage and berries.
I’m also a firm believer in offering funeral flowers all year round. During the months outside of your growing season, British flowers can always be purchased from and - just top them up with your own seasonal foliage.
In light of this, I’m offering a £50 discount on the cost of the full course until the end of January 2025. Follow the link to the course and use code JAN50 to access the discount. https://www.sustainablefuneralflowers.co.uk/sustainable-funeral-flowers

Can you believe that it's already time to order your Wreath Kits? The kits are available to pre-order during September at the discounted price of £23. On the 1st October the cost will increase to the full price of £28 per kit. The kit contains a detailed instructions booklet and all the ingredients required to create your own Christmas wreath.
Due to a change in circumstances there will be no workshops this year. However, if you order 4 or more kits the unit cost will be reduced to £20 per kit until the end of September and then £23 after that date - these kits are perfect for hosting your own wreath making workshop.
If you'd like to order please either send me a DM, email me: [email protected] or click here: https://square.link/u/0dvYzlgn with your preferred collection date. Available for collection in Littleover from mid November but I recommend choosing a collection date in early December.

This is the finished coffin blanket, created using the flowers and foliage cut from the garden. I belong to the Flowers from the Farm network of British growers. As it states on www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk: "Today 90% of the flowers sold through UK florists, supermarkets and wholesalers are imported not just from Holland but flown from as far afield as Ecuador, Colombia, Kenya and even Ethiopia. Flowers from the Farm aims to reduce travel miles by promoting locally-grown flowers and developing a network of British cut flower growers across the country. " I'm very proud of the fact that everything included here was grown in my small urban garden in Littleover.

The thing I like about this photo of one of my funeral flower arrangements is the fact that this was taken in front of the flower bed that some of the flowers came from. How's that for zero air miles.

The first time I was first asked to do some funeral flowers in 'muted' colours I had a bit of a panic wondering what I'd be able to include from the garden but now its one of my favourite colour schemes. The hydrangeas are changing from pink to green and the sedums are changing from green to pink and work perfectly. This arrangement was 5ft in total but made in three separate modules that butt up together to look like one seamless arrangement on the coffin. The family were planning to place one of the modules on another family member's grave after the service.

I think a flower-filled heart is one of my favourite funeral arrangements to create. There are so many delicate purple flowers to be found at this time of year. There must be over 150 different stems of flowers and foliage in this arrangement, all cut from my garden. Sweet peas aren't often used in arrangements because the stems might be too short, but that isn't an issue in a heart like this. The scent is amazing too.

It is coming up for 10 years since I took a short course on Floristry at Broomfield College and discovered a new passion for all things flowery. This was one of the first designs I did - which I still really like but was completely unaware that the methods and materials we were instructed to use were not eco-friendly. The design uses two blocks of floral foam which I have since found out is a single-use plastic which will never fully break down but will just leach micro-plastics into the environment. I stopped using it once I found how harmful it is to the environment - and the user. I was also more than happy to pop into the local supermarket and pick up a selection of flowers to use - oblivious to the fact that they had been flown thousands of miles and received all sorts of treatment to keep them as artificially fresh as possible. This is when my passion for seasonal British flowers and foliage was ignited.

Although this arrangement was produced a while ago, it is one that will stay in my memory for a long time. The family asked if it would be possible to include dandelions and I was more than happy to oblige, as seen in this photo. However, as I was taking the flowers to the car, I completely missed the fact that Lily, our Golden Retriever, was asleep in the hallway and I tripped over her and landed flat on my face. The flowers were OK except for the dandelion seed head which had exploded and disappeared. A moment I will never forget.

I quite often have requests for specific colours, rather than specific flower types. The families I work with are aware that the flowers that I use are dependent on the time of year. I think most shades of pink are covered here.

I think the China asters (Callistephus) are holding their own with the dahlias in these funeral flowers. Request was for summer flowers in white, pink, purple and green. I try to grow dahlias with smaller heads - I find the dinner plate varieties to be rather overwhelming in this type of arrangement.

These funeral flowers were ordered by a family who requested yellow, orange, pink and purple flowers in bright colours. All the flowers were cut from the garden, except for the clematis which was a special request and the family were told that these would need to be imported. The fabulous colours of the asters and the dahlias definitely fit the bill. The salvia blooms for months and I grow it every year. The arrangement was made in three foam-free modules and the pieces were taken home by different family members so that the flowers could be enjoyed after the ceremony.

Got to use lots of my dahlias for this funeral wreath. The colours remind of raspberry ripple ice cream. The oregano was smothered in bees when I cut it so left plenty in the garden. I always try to use British flowers, homegrown whenever possible, but when a family have a request for a specific flower - in this case the pink roses - I am happy to include them but always make sure families are aware when the arrangement will need to include imported flowers in order to meet that request.

The Callistephus (China asters) have just started to flower. I adore these flowers and think they are just as beautiful as dahlias and chrysanthemums. Definitely have a soft spot for this particular mix of colours as it is very similar to those included in my logo.

I receive some really lovely messages from families that I work with. The bit about the bees really made me choke up. I often get comments about the scent of the flowers and I think this is often unexpected but is a common aspect when locally grown seasonal flowers are used.

I think this is one of the most beautiful funeral wreaths I've created. I love using a mix of foliage and small headed flowers and I had such an abundance to pick for this wreath. Sweet peas and heather had a particular meaning for the family so it meant a lot that I was able to pick these and include them in the wreath. People have such nostalgic memories related to flowers and I'm really grateful when it's the right time of year to harvest specific family favourites to include.

Plastic-free flower arrangements

Having grown and arranged the flowers for my daughter’s wedding, I found a deep passion for creating natural, meadow-style flowers. Although brides are becoming more aware of the beauty of requesting British flowers and foliage for their wedding flowers, I feel that this style is also perfectly suited to funerals. I’m fully aware of the effects of plastic and floral foam on the environment and am delighted to be able to create arrangements which contain no plastic or floral foam. No two arrangements are the same and combine flowers and at least three types of different foliage in a natural, meadow style. In the summer months I grow and arrange British flowers, whenever possible, in order to reduce the air miles associated with imported flowers.

The Posy Patch flowers are a natural choice for any funeral and are perfectly suited to woodland burials. Some burial sites will only allow fresh flowers and do not permit containers, floral foam or plastic. I don’t use plastic or floral foam in any of the arrangements, and can use natural twine rather than wire so they are 100% biodegradable and will disappear into the earth over time, if required. I don’t use gerberas, orchids, anthuriums or any other flowers that wouldn’t flourish naturally in an English garden.

These arrangements are created using several different varieties of flowers and foliage to create a natural, relaxed design. My aim is to provide the perfect floral arrangement for your loved one, using locally sourced and British grown flowers. These natural, meadow-style arrangements are perfect for anyone looking for an alternative to the traditional formal style of funeral flowers.
