Whissonsett or Witcingkeseta as it was known in the Domesday Book means either the settlement of the Witcing tribe or a place of watery meadows. The village is in a valley on a tributary of the River Wensum with many wells and springs so 'watery meadows' describes it very well. Set in the heart of rural Norfolk, it is situated between the Market Towns of Fakenham and Dereham. Whissonsett is surrou

nded by farm land and orchards; the Village itself encircles a beautiful 14th century Church. It is an idyllic scene, but behind this seemingly timeless picture is the hard work carried out by generation after generation of ordinary Norfolk people to preserve and beautify the church and village they love. With a history dating from the Dark Ages and The Iceni Tribe (Eceni) to Modern times there is a lot more to the Village than first meets the eye.

Robert Smith MBE, the Wells Harbour Master is coming to Whissonsett Village Hall

Robert was born and raised on the North Norfolk Coast in Wells-Next-the-Sea and from a very early age of seven, he would be seen racing down to the harbour to mess around in boats. His ancestors dating back to the early 1700s have gained their livelihood from the harbour, sea and North Norfolk Coast. So it was a natural progression for Robert's path to lead him in the same direction, firstly working with his family as longshoremen, then for a local shipping company, until he joined Wells Harbour Commissioners thirty years ago, as an assistant Harbour Master, becoming Harbour Master in the year 2000.
During his time as Harbour Master and while serving for 27 yrs as crew and second Coxswain on the Wells lifeboat, has given him a great appreciation of the power and unpredictability of the sea, which has left him an enormous respect for it.
Robert is a regular public speaker and his talks Tales of a Harbour Master not only give an interesting history into Wells Harbour but also takes you on a light hearted & amusing journey of his time as a serving HM.
He was recognised in the New Years honours list in 2016/17 and was awarded an MBE for his services to the Port and Community of Wells. In 2018 Robert had his first book published called "Crossing the Bar" with being dyslexic, was one of the biggest challenges he had undertaken but also one of the most satisfying.
When asked what he enjoys most about his work, he replies the "Fresh Air & Freedom
