NOT ME YOU FOOL - THE F*CKING CACTUS PLANTS !

Nell McCafferty - Trailblazer, Feminist, Journalist and Campaigner, who died this morning at the age of 80.

I took this picture of Nell on March 23rd 2017 as thousands, including dignitaries from all over the world, were in town to attend the funeral of former Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in Derry.

I was returning to my car and had run into Nell in the Bogside, as she stood on Westland Street talking with a group of visitors who had recognised her and were standing in awe as Nell, in her trademark, no nonsense, straight talking manner, was giving them an informal oration on her thoughts about make-up in politics.

When the encounter was over and the group had bade farewell to Nell and moved on, she turned to me -

"Follow me, I've a picture for you - Did you know that Martin liked to grow cactus plants ? Humanize the man." she said, insisting that I follow her to photograph the cactus plants at Martin’s house.

Then as Nell stood there in Martin McGuinness's driveway, I snapped this photo of her to which she retorted:

"Not me you fool, the f*ckin cactus plants."

I told her I'd send her the picture, which I did, and she said "If you send me any of those f*cking emojis I'm blocking you."

Yes, apparently Nell hated emojis - R.I.P.

BALLYLONGFORD OYSTER FESTIVAL - Behind the scenes !

Friday night in the Kerry village of Ballylongford and the Oyster eaters were building up for the annual Oyster Eating competition in the village square. Before the competiton could commence, approxomately 350 oysters had to be prised shucked and prepared.

I can now proudly add "Oyster Shucking" to my CV as I reckon I shucked my fair share behind the scenes ahead of the main event.

Most impressive fact - The winner of the ladies' competition has entered for the past sixteen years, scoring a third and two seconds on her first three attempts and for the past thirteen years she's taken the top spot on the podium AND she doesn't even like oysters !!!

Amelia !

With the final touches less than an hour old - This is Derry’s latest head turner of a mural.

A tribute to Amelia Earhart, who in May 1932, became the first woman to fly nonstop and alone across the Atlantic.

Flying her red Lockheed Vega, she left Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, Canada, and landed 15 hours later in a field at Ballyarnett on the outskirts of Derry.

Five years after her transatlantic flight, on this very date, July 2, in 1937, Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world.

Abandoned Fairytale !

Burj Al Babas - A partially constructed, abandoned development of 732 three-story luxury villas - about a two and a half hour drive from Istanbul.

The centre of the development (the large structure visible behind the bulk of villas) was to include a domed structure containing a shopping centre, health and beauty facilities such as Turkish baths, a mosque, a movie theatre, and other facilities open to residents

The houses were on sale for between $370,000 and $530,000.

Construction began on the complex in 2014. Using 2,500 workers, the developers aimed to finish the project in four years. The development was originally successful with approximately half of the castles selling in advance.

In 2018 sales eventually stalled, causing the developer to enter bankruptcy.

Falling oil prices and instability in Turkey were cited as reasons for the slump in sales. The mayor of Mudurnu, Mehmet İnegöl, remained confident that the project would begin again.

As of 2024, however, 587 of the planned 732 homes were started, with very few reaching the landscaping phase. None were finished.

ALTHOUGH ABANDONED - There's usually a few guys, who may or may not be legitimate security, I haven't researched that bit too deeply to be fair, who will allow access to the villas. They asked for Fifty euro for thirty minutes. We got them down to thirty euro and managed well over an hour of exploring before they came looking for us.

Things I Found Out After The Visit ...

Burj Al Babas is the setting for the music video of "Lose Control", a 2019 song by Meduza, Becky Hill and Goodboys.

The music video of "Bad girls, good vibes" by German rapper Ufo361 was filmed in this location.

The music video for "Sober" by French electronic musician SebastiAn was partially shot in Burj Al Babas.

Gaspard Augé, also a French electronic musician, shot two music videos for "Belladone" and the title track from his 2021 album Escapades in Burj Al Babas.

The rapper Quadeca used this location in the music video for the song "Fractions of Infinity" featuring Sunday Service Choir.

The YouTube channel STORROR filmed an episode of Hide and Seek in Burj Al Babas in 2023.

It is featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!.

So, travelling the back roads of Burt a few weeks ago, visiting childhood locations, I discovered that Burt Castle was surrounded by fields of Green and Gold.

So, I pulled in, reached for my drone, ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT - I'd left it behind and only had a camera with me.

Anyways - Long story short (as my Burt da used to say before making a short story long), grabbed a few low level camera shots before making a return visit, a few days later, with my drone.

After battling some high winds, and explaining to an Indian family (who'd parked at Peoples' house) that I didn't live there and couldn't grant them right of way, through the rapeseed fields, to the castle I DISCOVERED THAT every other fe**er, within a fifty mile radius, had posted pictures of "Burt Castle in Donegal Surrounded By The Green & Gold Of Donegal"

Well Congratulations Donegal on the recent success - But Feckkit - I need to make this picture unique.
So here we go...

Regardless of the protection of artistic licence, I realise that this posting may have been a step too far and I accept that I may never again be able to visit Burt ever again !

A TROUBLED PLACE - THE DOME OF THE ROCK - HOLY CITY - JERUSALEM !

(Pictured from The Mount Of Olives.)

The jewel in the crown of Temple Mount/Al Haram Ash Sharif is the gold-plated Dome of the Rock, the enduring symbol of the city and one of the most photographed buildings on earth.

As its name suggests, the dome covers a slab of stone sacred to both the Muslim and Jewish faiths.

According to Jewish tradition, it was here that Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son.

Islamic tradition has the Prophet Muhammad ascending to heaven from this spot.

Only Muslims can enter the temple, though modestly attired visitors of all creeds can see it from the outside as part of their walk around the plaza.

Even before the vile Hamas acts of October 7th and the subsequent genocide currently being visited upon the innocent men, women and children of Gaza by Israel - The feeling that this contested place was a true tinderbox packed with conflicting religions and all that comes with them - was palpable.

This really was a religiously charged place on the edge, always just waiting for something to happen !

Borderlines - Sunrise in Macau !

A View From the Cowne Plaza Hotel in Macau - Asia's Las Vegas - Macau is an "SAR" (Special Administrative Region) within the People's Republic Of China. Gambling is big business here and Macau brings in approximately three times more than Vegas in gambling revenue as gambling in mainland China and the Peoples Republic of China is illegal.

The small section of carriageway at the bottom right and the three buildings in the distance are in Macau - The bridge running from the bottom left leads to mainland china and in the distance, behind the three buildings, is the 55-km (34 mi) Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB) which links Macau with Hong Kong.

The floating rope is apparently to prevent small craft from crossing between China and Macau.

THE MURAL !

Standing there yesterday, on the walls, trying to grab some daylight pics of the new Undertones mural when I was practically ambushed by the "Talking Derry Girls" podcast girls, who had linked Greg McCartney (the man behind the commissioning of the mural) onto the walls, before ordering me to take pics of them on on their mobile phone.

Well I had no choice, I was outnumbered.

For my troubles I managed to get rewarded with a "Talking Derry Girls" business card (a group of Canadian and North American tourists just had only scored one of those babies between their entire group !!! ) But as they claimed that they'd never heard of the Undertones, Teenage Kicks or even "My Cousin ""Vinny"" " it was more than they deserved !

ALSO - Chuffed to see that the official Undertones page has shared my night shots of the mural - That's surely retirement royalties signed and sealed :-)

BTW. Facial expressions due to the fact that they thought I was going to fall off the walls whilst taking the pic.

Think Keelin and “Fred deserve a shout out on the page. As I was photographing the Undertones’ mural, they asked for a pic.

Darkest of locations with a 15 Second exposure and no flash, fresh from the doorway of Mason’s, they stood rock solid, with little movement for the pics .
