What is a Commitment Ceremony?

Commitment Ceremonies are designed for couples of any gender, that want to make a commitment to each other, without the legalities of a legal marriage or civil partnership.

This ceremony is designed to allow a couple to make a life-long commitment to each other, in the presence of their family and friends, within a ceremony that has deep personal meaning to the couple. The ceremony can feel quite traditional and resemble a wedding celebration ceremony, or could be more contemporary.
The couple could exchange rings or gifts and they could make vows or promises during the ceremony.

Why would a couple choose a Commitment Ceremony, rather than a Wedding Celebration Ceremony?

There are many reasons that a couple might choose this kind of a ceremony;

Some couples don’t want to add complications to their relationship caused by financial or legal ties.

For some it might impact on their widow(er)s pension to remarry, and this would impact on their income.

It might be that one or both people in the relationship have children and they often want to avoid complications around inheritance and property issues by marrying.

For others there could be issues with the venue, their licence renewal to offer a legal marriage, and rather than cancel the whole day, a commitment ceremony allows the couple to carry on with their celebration and then have their legal marriage on a future date.

Due to this ceremony being a ‘Commitment’ rather than a ‘Wedding’ celebration, the couple wouldn’t be obliged to have a legal marriage before the ceremony.

Whatever the reason for choosing a Commitment Ceremony, the couple will be able to pledge their commitment to each other and their relationship in a deeply meaningful and personal way in the presence of their loved ones.

What is a Renewal of Vows Ceremony?

Renewal of Vows ceremonies are designed for couples of any gender who want to reaffirm their Marriage or Civil Partnership vows.

The ceremony reaffirms the couple’s commitment to each other, in a special celebration that has been individually designed for them. Some couples want the ceremony to have a level of formality and represent a more traditional wedding celebration, whilst others prefer something more relaxed, and informal.

The Renewal of Vows can be held in any location and at any time, and invited family and friends could take part in the ceremony . This is a particularly good way of involving children, grandchildren and other younger members of the family, who wouldn’t have been at the original ceremony.

Some couples want to commit to the same vows or promises that they made in their original ceremony, whilst others want to write new vows to reflect their relationship as it has developed over time.

For some couples, a Renewal of Vows ceremony is held to celebrate a certain milestone in their relationship, an anniversary or special birthday. For some the ceremony might be arranged after the couple have gone through a period of difficulty such as illness, and for others there might not be any particular reason for the ceremony except for a desire to publicly re-confirm their commitment to their partner and their relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions – 10 - Can our ceremony be videoed?

During a Celebrant led ceremony there aren’t rules preventing filming or photographing any stage of the proceedings. This will allow those special moments in your very special day to be captured, allowing you opportunity to look back at your ceremony for years to come.

Your celebrant will be able to discuss the use of video recording equipment or cameras during the ceremony at the planning stages for your celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions – 9 - We want to have a themed wedding, and perhaps dress as characters from our favourite film is this allowed?

Absolutely, themed ceremonies are popular with some couples and would be allowed in Celebrant led ceremonies.

The celebrant will be able to advise couples about the use of themes and make suggestions to support their thinking about how the theme could be incorporated into their big day.

The theme could include clothing (for the couple and
sometimes their guests), choice of words and phrases used in the ceremony, choices of readings and
music used in the ceremony and elements of the after ceremony celebration such as food and drink,
speeches and entertainment.

Frequently Asked Questions – 8 - Can our dog be included in our ceremony?

Dogs are really important to many couples and often they will want them to be included in their special
ceremony.

Dogs can be included in Celebrant led ceremonies and couples should speak to their Celebrant about ways that their pet/s can be incorporated.

One example is that dogs can be excellent ring bearers, and when supported by an adult, a dog could bring the rings into the ceremony, often attached in some way to their collar. This can be a very special and unique moment for the couple, their family and their friends.

(The couple would need to check their chosen venue's policies with regards to pets being allowed on site, in advance of the ceremony)

Frequently Asked Questions – 7 - Can our children be included in our ceremony?

Children, parents and any other family member or friend can be included in the ceremony.

Some celebrant led ceremonies feel like traditional wedding ceremonies with bridesmaids and page boys, whilst others have a very individual and unique structure designed and chosen by the couple with
support from their Celebrant.

Children, family members and friends can be included in a range of ways. This might be through reading a poem, a prayer or reading. It might also be that they take part in a symbolic action such as helping with a handfasting action or that they bring the couples rings into the ceremony (ring bearer).

Couples can discuss their wishes with the Celebrant during their planning meetings, and their ideas can be woven into the ceremony’s structure.

Frequently Asked Questions – 6 - Can we include some religious elements in the ceremony?

Religious elements can be included in any ceremony. Sometimes, couples want to include a religious aspect to the ceremony, to acknowledge their upbringing or the religious beliefs of their family.

Whilst celebrants don’t deliver religious ceremonies, elements can be respectfully woven into the ceremony by adding a reading, a prayer, a hymn or a blessing.

Religious elements can be from any religious denomination, and therefore this can be beneficial when a couple have different religious backgrounds, as elements can be incorporated from both faiths.
