The Flower Pedlar

The Flower Pedlar As a Pedlar, I used to push my barrow of flowers around city centres but changing times mean change for me too.

I am now taking bouquet orders for beautiful freshly picked English Country Garden flowers grown by me in the Meon Valley.

I thought it was about time I reintroduced myself. So here I am a plant-aholic flower lover, usually looking scruffy with scratched hands, dirty fingernails and twigs in my hair. In the early days, a post-children career change led me to garden design because I loved gardening and had a vision of working at my drawing board with my small children quietly playing will toys at my feet. Ah hem, that didn’t quite work out! After qualifying at Sparsholt, I ended up designing more than 100 gardens over the years and that led to me setting up a gardening agency where I used to find ‘proper’ gardeners for people who needed them. I then took a back seat working as a Communal Garden Gardener for a large estate for a few years until I started working the flowers I grew into garden style bouquets. I’m a full time flower farmer florist now and have been for 5 years. I’m still loving flowers. Still loving what I do. Best job ever!

I love this connection between my flowers and the creativity of a customer in my village which gives a lovely sense of community. Jacqui is very talented. I wish I could draw like this, although she calls it a “doodle” - some doodle! Her Christmas tree “doodle” is beautiful too. Her page is here if you want to give her a quick follow

🥺BAD NEWS FOLLOWS (sorry!) 🥺Dear lovely customers, As the growing season comes to an end, so do my allotment-grown flowers. I will now have to rely on the wholesaler which means my prices will rise to £15 for a brown paper Wrap and £7 for a jam jar posy. I am shocked at how much the wholesale prices have risen and prices there are mostly more than that of a supermarket. You can rest assured that thought and artistry will go into each of my carefully designed bunches. This price rise means that at the wholesaler, I can choose THE MOST beautiful flowers and my bunches will not (supermarket-like) contain cheap generic yellow chrysanthemum or God forbid, a dyed one! Thank you for your understanding. Debbie x My weekend Flower Stall is at the Droxford School crossroads SO32 3QR

“It ain’t over, ‘til it’s over!” As the growing season draws to a close, that feeling of loss returns and the dark days arrive when, BOOM, my life is flower-filled again! We popped over to 🌷 in Holland for a very flowery weekend. You’ve heard of holland’s spring bulb fields, well there are also dahlia fields. We hired a tandem and a scooter from and happily zipped along the colourful fields, stopping at flowery places along the way. In the insect and butterfly filled dahlia fields, I found new favourites; the colour and size of which just can’t be captured in the photograph of a brochure. Holland does horticulture in a BIG way and the garden centres are amazing with so many solutions for all things gardening. We joined other smiley people on bikes on the off-road designated scooter route, passing sweet little Dutch houses and gardens, lakes and through villages to be explored. My floral itch has been well and truly scratched and I’ve had enough of a flowery fix with lovely memories to see me through the dark days of winter ahead. I’ll share more treats from my trip in my stories this week so you can enjoy them too.

I’ve been busy helping with so I’m posting the garden-y ones here to make you smile. The second to last one I found in the church and was surprised to learn that she is St Rose of Viterbo, the Patron Saint of florists and flower growers! The naked gardener made lots of people laugh when they looked under the fig leaf 🫣

AI is so clever. I asked “describe a bouquet containing Dahlia, Phlox, cycoglossum etc” and it did this: Imagine a vibrant bouquet bursting with color and texture. At the center, the bold, multi-petaled dahlias stand out with their rich hues of deep red, pink, and yellow, creating a stunning focal point. Surrounding them, clusters of delicate phlox add a touch of softness with their pastel shades of lavender and white, bringing a sweet fragrance. Interspersed among them, the unique cycoglossum, with its striking blue petals, adds an exotic flair, while the feathery, airy achillea introduces a subtle creaminess, providing a lovely contrast. The lacy white blooms of daucus, or Queen Anne’s lace, weave through the arrangement, adding an element of whimsy and lightness. The cheerful cosmos bring a playful energy with their bright pink and orange flowers, while the coneflowers, or echinacea, with their distinctive cone-shaped centers and vibrant purple petals, complete the bouquet, adding height and interest. This arrangement not only showcases a beautiful spectrum of colors but also a delightful mix of different shapes and textures, making it a captivating centerpiece.

It’s 🐶 today. When you work alone, having a dog helps combat loneliness and pets are proven to reduce stress and improve mental health. My labs Winnie and Kizzy make me laugh every single day and I often chat to them, asking things like “now why hasn’t that germinated?”. They rarely reply or offer suggestions, but it doesn’t matter. When I’m on my knees weeding, Winnie often gets between me and the flower bed when she wants some attention, or I just look over and she is laying flat on her back just looking at me with her tail wagging. Woman’s best friend for sure🐾❤️

“It’s such a lovely day, let’s have lunch in the garden”
There’s something special about eating outside and gathering with friends and family under the sun (or stars) for food and drinks. Alfresco dining is a simple adventure and the summer air and scents produce a flood of happy memories of holidays. It could be a sandwich eaten on a kitchen chair moved outside or for a more elaborate garden lunch, you could get dressed up in flowery shirts and dresses, add sun hats to the back of a chair for your guests and, OF COURSE, add lots of flowers to the table and the food. Flowers make everything better 💐
