Ramblings of a middle to late aged woman. Bare with me. ..... (First chapter of my book. One day I will finish it. Bird by Bird.
I don't normally write stuff like this but felt it would be good to share the following to support others who may at times feel overwhelmed by 'stuff' whether it's physical stuff or mental stuff in these funny but amazing brain of ours.
I had a lovely idea (in my opinion) to use some cheap decals I bought from my favourite online shop to decorate some bits and pieces around the house.
I kept putting these lovely wee jobs off even although I was looking forward to get back into doing something crafty.
I realised I couldn't see the wood for the trees. Or floors in this case.
Believe it or not our floors were really really filthy. (Having a dog and getting our driveway done doesn't help)
My floors were really annoying me to the extent they were putting a very dark cloud in my headspace. Not somewhere you would like to be; believe me! So ...I gave time and thought to this developing cloud of mine.
One of my favourite books as some of you know is Bird by Bird by Ann Lamott. (Kindly gifted to me by a really lovely friend Ruth Higham. Sadly no longer with us) It's particularly about writing and ideas on what strategies to put in place within the written word.
Ann Lamott in her book talks about her brother who was tasked to learn about many species of birds during his school break. Like a lot of us he left it until the last minute. He looked to his father for some support and advice. His father said simply. Take it 'BIRD BY BIRD'
What his dad was suggesting was learning about one bird at a time. Taking small steps rather than looking at the big overwhelming picture! A bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle I assume. It always looks to me a bit daunting when my husband David takes out a new puzzle. Where to start? But as soon as he begins to interlock pieces together the picture begins to form. I'm sure all puzzle lovers have their own strategies. Similar colours together? Corners and edges together?
What I thought was, if you don't open the box you will never see the end result. You will never feel the pleasure of finishing, completing the task.
I thought about Bird by Bird as I began to tackle the 4 large floors that were messing with my head. One rectangled tile at a time. I got it! The solution? 'Tile by Tile' I aggressively tackled each tile. Finishing off one tile before I started another. In my head repeating the mantra, bird by bird bird by flipping bird! As I looked closely I began to see the difference in each tile which gave me oh such pleasure and pride in what I was achieving. I was so glad I had started this task which two days ago I thought was insurmountable. Now the floors are finished (thanks to my lovely husband who gave me a BIG helping hand).
The moral of this wee story is two fold.
If you see, in your world, a mountain to climb? Take it step by step ...one step at a time. Bit by bit, and you will accomplish all you need to and feel that pride in your belly.
Also do not be afraid or too proud to ask for help. We cannot live this life on our own. I certainly can't. If Ann Lamotts brother hadn't sought the help of his father he would probably never have managed to do his Bird project.
This afternoon I was able to take pleasure in doing the few craft projects I had been putting off. Why? The dark cloud was gone! The barrier was lifted allowing me to move forward. What dark clouds are invading your head space? ๐ค You can do it!!!! 'BIRD BY BIRD'
The photos: My newly washed floors 'tile by dirty tile' and my wee hints of artistic pleasure.
Potentially looking for a Doggy carer for our gorgeous mini labradoodle Mollie for possibly 2 weeks beginning of June. Any recommendations?
