"We had a such a good time this evening, it was great chatting with you! We're very excited for whats to come" Thank you Jason and Bethany, the feeling is mutual x

According to Cambridge Dictionary, Kindred Spirits means, "a person who has the same opinions, feelings, and interests as you: 'We recognised each other as kindred spirits as soon as we met'."

Finding the person who is going to marry you should feel a bit like this - you just get each other!

Joy!

It is such a visceral emotion and is so utterly infectious!

You can find it in a pair of sparkly eyes, in twitchy fingers, in wrinkling noses and in giddy chins. Just like in this joyful pair I had the pleasure of marrying. And there I am soaking up the joy and pocketing it to take with me for the rest of the day. pocketing joy - a wonderful side effect of the job!

Wishing you a weekend full of joy; find it and pocket that gold dust x

When it comes down to it, life is about human connections.
So these kind words speak to my heart.
As you embark on a milestone moment, if I can connect with you, help you to feel more at ease, more present, more you, well I have done my job.

These two are dotes. Pure dotes. 🦞🦞

Trust...

Is key between a couple and your celebrant. This beautiful pair, Alex and Kevin, are absolutely sure of who they are and how to squeeze the best out of life, whether that is up a mountain or diving underwater. But one thing they weren't entirely sure of, was if they needed a celebrant for their wedding day.

Alex and Kevin had already gone off to their local registrar where they live in Germany and completed the legal bit in a simply beautiful and quiet way. And so Alex and Kevin wanted to understand was how a trained celebrant like me would alter the day. So we chatted...

About the 9 month process we would have together in order for me to understand who they are. To understand the ebb and flow of their journey: the good times and the trickier times, the pivotal moments and changes in direction, the important people, places and things that guided their decisions and the funny, ridiculous craic that happened along the way.

About the wealth of resources I would bring to help them choose existing readings, vows and symbolic acts or how to create original ones that perfectly reflected them.

About the hours I would spend creating and editing an original wedding script which would sow together the fabric of their lives in an authentic and effortless way.

About the rehearsal we could have in the week leading up to the wedding and the advice I could offer to help calm nerves, feel present and steady their voices in those final moments.

About the day of the wedding and how I would arrive in advance to oversee their ceremony area, liaise with the venue staff, with the musicians, the readers and to rehearse.

About the 3 minutes before Alex walked into the room when I would come see her, offer a breathing exercise to aid a centred and content walk up the aisle.

About the vocal and presentation skills that would give them the reassurance that everyone in the room or outside on the pier would hear every word of their story.

About the powers of improvisation and dealing with the unexpected things by gauging the room and adding humour or a slight change where needed.

Alex and Kevin trusted me and as you can see from the last photo I was pure buzzing!

“Not that we even needed to discuss anything but we would love to have you marry us!!”

When you receive an email like this precisely 60 secs after the discovery call ends from these two shiny happy dotes, a wee happy tear might just sneak out 🥹

It is such a privilege to get to meet so many beautiful souls. People who start off as complete strangers and yet end up as people who you get to know so well and who trust you to write and tell their unique story on their most joyful day.

Nicola sent me this snap of her and Mark having a wee toast to finding their perfect celebrant.

I can’t wait! X

My mum walked me down the aisle.

The spotlight is not her natural habitat so that morning she was a little 'jittery'. But she did it because she wanted to be there by my side, as she always is.

Well this last few weeks, my mum has needed me by her side for a change and so that's where I am.

Bear with me if I am a little quieter on here and in responding to your enquiries.

Seamus Heaney’s Scaffolding

This poem comes back to me time and time again, revealing new layers and unseen relevance. Heaney’s simplicity reminds me that words don’t need to be complex to pack a punch. Unpretentious and precise - the perfect reading for couples who like a message that’s plain speaking yet poignant.

Side note, Seamus Heaney acts as the Oracle for all decision making in our house 😂 This painting, skilfully captured by Paul Digby Artist of the big Bellaghy man hangs high in our living room and his eyes are always watching (helps keep the toddlers in check 😉) The perfect wedding gift from Tríona Rafferty Photography

This feedback really gets me.

I love it when the word community feels tangible in real time, when you are sitting in a room with a gathering of lovely humans sharing an experience and everyone feels a sense of belong and part of something that will never happen again. You know that same feeling you get when you are at a gig and something really special happens or when an unexpected moment occurs on stage. It's the joy of a LIVE experience. That moment will never happen again.
That's how I feel about your ceremony. A moment, a gathering, where everyone you love comes together to celebrate you and the excitement is in knowing that you shared that unique, present moment together.
Pure Magic

Step 8: The Ceremony

By the time the big day has arrived, I will have spent around 20 hours - meeting and getting to know you, designing, scripting and editing your ceremony. And all of that effort to craft the most authentic piece of writing for you, needs to be matched with a pitch perfect delivery.

‘What is your style?’

The perfect question to ask your potential celebrant. While every one of my amazing colleagues accredited by Humanists UK will be trained to the same exacting standards, the absolute joy of a humanist wedding is that we we all bring our own unique style to the ceremony and it’s about find the right fit for you.

Me, I thrive on being utterly prepared with a winning script that has your seal of approval but then trusting the magic of the moment to direct the flow of the ceremony! With a background in performance, reading the room and adapting to the atmosphere is where I feel most in my element.

Perhaps I see that you feeling overcome with emotion and are going to struggle to steady your voice; perhaps we have a joke that really gets the crowd rolling with laughter; maybe there’s a little one who is determined to join you two at the front or maybe we are outside, like this one when the birds have decided to break in to full chorus!

My strengths lie in being able to improvise and adapt to the environment on the day to ensure that your wedding story is perfectly you. Memorable, meaningful and marvellous craic!

Step 7: Before the Ceremony

In Theatre, we talk about
the moment before,
the moment of,
and the moment after an event.
and each have equal importance.

Well, in the moments before a ceremony begins, as the guest arrive, the musicians warm up and the atmosphere starts to bubble, my job is to gently observe and shepherd every single aspect of the wedding space to ensure it is as close to your vision as possible…

The lighting feels warm and welcoming, the walkways are clear of straps, elderly guest have a seat with a view, microphones have been tested and seats have been filled from the inside out so latecomers can sneak in without fuss.

Tiny little touches that help you feel that someone is watching over you and your day.

Step 6: Notice of Marriage

Give notice to the whole WORLD (but most importantly to the local registry office) that you are getting married!

Since 2018 Humanist weddings in Northern Ireland are legal. Hooray for !Just like a civil or religious service, a humanist celebrant will officiate your legal ceremony and guide you in filling out the legal documentation.

As the person officiating your marriage, I will sign your forms, both parties to the marriage then send their completed marriage notice forms, relevant documents, declarations and fees to the Registrar of Marriages for the council district where the marriage is to take place. Your marriage notice will be placed on public display at the registrar’s office.

This all needs to be completed at least 28 days ahead of the big day but ideally 4 months in advance to keep everyone’s nerves in check!
