We thought it would be interesting for our followers far and wide, to start the year off with a little sneak 'behind the scenes' at some of the work and wider contributions to the Dunoon Presents organisation and who better to give that insight than one of the current board directors, Ciorsdan Fagan. She will be known to many of our local followers but less so to many of our Facebook friends across Scotland and beyond

VOLUNTEERING

Many people ask me what Dunoon Presents is, what it does and what I do for Dunoon Presents. Some people think I work for Dunoon Presents, and I guess I do, but it’s on a purely voluntary basis. For those of you who don’t know, Dunoon Presents is the town’s Business Improvement District (BID). The BID covers Dunoon, Kirn, Hunter’s Quay, Hafton, Ardnadam and Sandbank. Eligible businesses within the area pay a BID levy to the Council (who collect the levy for the BID company) and this money is collectively used to deliver events and projects that benefit the local economy and community.
The work of the BID is delivered by the BID Manager, Colin Moulson, who works incredibly hard all year to deliver all elements the BID work covers. I am one of the organisation Directors. My name is Ciorsdan (Kirsten) Fagan. All Directors are volunteers, who give up their time to support the organisation in numerous ways, including attending monthly meetings to discuss and agree strategies for the year ahead and providing physical and technical help at events. Every single event we put on requires a large amount of physical and technical work. This work is not just delivered by Colin and the volunteer directors, but also by many other supportive volunteers.

Here is a list of all the events Dunoon Presents put on in 2024:

COMMUNITY
- Dunoon Winterfest (over two weekends, including entertainment, a market, fairground rides, and Santa’s grotto)
- Cowal Fringe Festival (for the Highland Gathering, including the sunset ceremony and a market)

MUSIC
- Doon the Watter Revival weekender
- Punk on the Peninsula
- Dunoon Tradfest (variety of events including a free family ceilidh)

SPORTS
- Dunoon 10km Coastal road race
- Dunoon Ultra Marathon & Relay
- Glorious Gravel Wild Westie cycle race
- Grit of Dunoon Gravel Cycling Championships
- Argyll Rally

Town Centre Markets held in:
- March (with free Easter activities)
- May
- July
- August
- September
- October (with free Halloween activities)
- November (over 2 weekends)
These events bring a substantial amount of money to the businesses in the area as well as providing entertainment for the local community.
We also organise the Dunoon gift card vouchers, the town centre flags, the annual Dunoon Community Champion awards, we collaborated on the fire site fence and we ferried cruise ship visitors to and from Dunoon town centre last year.

In addition to the above, we are also working on the following town projects:

- a pump cycle track
- Port Riddell slipway to increase open water swimming partcipation
- a digital town notice board
- shop fronts
- improving parking

One of the areas I have been particularly contributing towards over the past year is the markets. Hopefully you will have noticed our regular markets increasing in size, quality, and variety, including locally sourced produce, artists and crafters. One stall holder I have yet to try and obtain is a fresh fruit and vegetables stall. I’ve tried everywhere, but unfortunately not been successful on getting one to come yet. I will keep trying this coming year though. Other things I’ve helped with over 2024 is the organisational rebranding and I provided some general marketing advice.
I’ve been a Director for just under 2 years and really enjoy it. It’s not always easy and you do give up your free time, but I’ve always felt that it’s good to give something back to the community you live and work in, so this is my way of doing that.
