This lion's head is actually the doorbell for the main entrance. To use the doorbell, a man on his horse was supposed to pull the lever on the lion using his riding boot. It is a fine example of how no expense was spared in creating Manderston. If you're looking to host an event in a stately home, why not get in touch with us today: [email protected]

Featured in this painting is Rock Sand who was proudly owned by our family. He was bred by Sir James Miller out of Roquebrune and sired by Sainfoin, at Sir James's Stud at Hamilton, near Newmarket. In 1903 Rock Sand won the prestigious 'Triple Crown' which includes the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby and St Leger, which has only been done three times in the last century. It is interesting to notice the change in style of the jockeys in just the thirteen years between the two paintings. You will find this painting in the Racing Room.

Fun Fact - early in his career, it was commented that Rock Sand was too small to be a Derby winner

This is a painting of Sainfoin who was proudly owned by our ancestor, Sir James Miller, who purchased him two days before the 1890 Derby. He won the Derby, romping home at a price of twenty-five to one. He later went on to sire Rock Sand, winner of the Derby in 1903.

Will you be watching the Derby this weekend? - Sainfoin was foaled at Hampton Court Stud and was first owned by Queen Victoria

A little about Manderston

Manderston is available for exclusive hire for weddings, corporate events, private events, film and photo shoots and leisure breaks.

Manderston is the supreme country house of Edwardian Scotland; the swan-song of its era. A house on which no expense was spared with opulent staterooms, the only silver-staircase in the world and extensive "downstairs" domestic quarters. The House stands in 56 acres of formal gardens, with magnificent stables, a boat house by a secluded lake and a stunning marble dairy. John Kinross the architect, when enquiring how large his budget was, was told that money was no object. Guests have always been stunned by the history and grandeur of the house, making it one of Britain's most unique venues.
