On Armistice Day, we remember the 40,000 members of the Durham Miners' Association who served during the First World War.

Pictured are recruits gathered on the Racecourse - the site then and now of the Durham Miners' Gala - following the outbreak of war.

By the time the Gala returned in July 1919, more than 10,000 DMA members had lost their lives, and 5,000 remained in the armed forces.
