Embracing the season with pumpkin coloured chrysanthemums from We used these in our 1:2 class last week when friends Alison and Ann came to learn about wedding flowers as they each have a child, grown up obviously, who is getting married next year and they plan to help each other at their respective events. More of that later, let’s enjoy the fruits of the season for now.

Wedtober, so called because it’s our busiest month, is almost at an end but we have a few more weddings to squeeze into these squares. Mhari’s bouquet typifies the season - soft mustard, rich chocolate and gentle marmalade tones, all appropriate for the couples flourishing business

One year ago we drove east and north through a canopy of amber, russet and gold to a special house shrouded in an autumnal mantle where Rachel & Tonie were to be married. As talented photographers have seen a lot of flowers so it was incredibly flattering to be chosen to provide flowers for their wedding day. was on hand to weave her magic words and share their story and every moment and minutiae was captured by the artist that is

What a joy to look back upon this glorious day.

Good light and an errant rubber glove. For someone meticulously about the little details it was a surprise to see this green glove on the table in this photograph but it amuses me.

I’ve run out of warm and fuzzy words for Autumn but my heart is overflowing for the rich beauty which it provides for us daily. It seems to be the shortest season, although today, we’ve been given an Cara hour to enjoy it.

I will cut adrift—I will sit on pavements and drink coffee—I will dream; I will take my mind out of its iron cage and let it swim—this fine October.

Virginia Woolf

This quote describes what we did last week perfectly and now that we’re home it would be nice to retain some of those elements of life which travel grants us. It’s very definitely not a day for sitting on pavements and drinking coffee though. I hope that the storm passes you by uneventfully.

Pattern. That’s something which Porto does very well. The blue and white tiles, neat rows of fenestration and pile upon pile of custard tarts. It’s still summer here with temperatures in the mid 20’s and the greens just beginning to turn to yellow. I’m sure that there will be a sharp contrast in the landscape when we return home.

An autumnal urn in the worst room with the best light with dahlias from Blue and orange, complimentary colours, opposites on the colour wheel and part of a series of classes where we teach the fundamentals of design, supplying our students with the knowledge to make decisions with confidence whist working with flowers.

We’ll be continuing with more classes in this series on the spring, when the flowers begin to grow again.

October weddings, is there anything more wonderful? It’s a time of year when our diaries are bursting, particularly around a day at the end of the month which is everyone’s favourite celebration. The foliage is at peak perfection and the warming hues of the accompanying flowers just sublime. The outdoor temperatures and golden light are just right for those special shots. What better time of year is there to be married?

Monday in the workshop looked a little like this when Carole and Gill came to visit. We started with a foam free demonstration and a chat about colour before Carole and Gill snipped from the eye catching autumnal foliage in the garden to pair with the selection of flowers in analogous hues provided for their delectation indoors. provided the ingredients for a hearty lunch and we rounded off the day making grapevine wreaths stuffed with berries and bracken.
There was a fair amount of business chat which is often the way when trusted peers come together to share knowledge.
We host a schedule of classes sprinkled throughout the year for all levels and can tailor individual or group learning to suit your needs.

I was asked several times last week what my favourite flower is and it’s a question I never have an answer to. I do have favourites, of course, but can’t possibly narrow it down to one. I love the swirling petals of a dinner plate sized Cafe au Lait dahlia but would rarely use one in my work, it wouldn’t be autumn without velvety rudbeckia or spring without snakes head fritillaries. A majestic foxglove will always have my heart but tiny blooms like forget me nots, epimedium and violas have me marvelling at their delicacy… oh and I can’t possibly omit Icelandic poppies. A n**e rose, I love and knows it 😉 but what I admire most is any flowers tenacity, it’s will to survive. A tiny seed, packed with genetic material, knowledge of the life about to unfurl with a the addition of a little soil, a drop of rain and warmth from the sun.

October brings a feeling of warmth despite the very evident chill in the air. It’s this precise chill which allows the leaves to change and fall away. It would be beneficial for our species, if we too could follow the seasons and make room for change, and for everything which no longer serves us to fall away. For the trees, this is essential for their life cycle, to perpetuate, but we humans soldier on, without listening to the seasons, our bodies often calling out for change.

Two wise women came to the workshop yesterday and we held each other up and ended the day with our souls enriched.

We travelled to the east coast yesterday for a site visit and an opportunity to check in with one of the bambinos studying there. The landscape has reached that sweet spot where the leaves are trembling, about to fall in the next hard frost but in the mean time they’re really going for it - mustard, turmeric, burnt umber, sienna, ochre…

Tiny alpine strawberries, saved from the perpetually snacking garden birds made it into boutonnières earlier this summer. On this day, 1st October, the month where we traditionally celebrate the harvest, it’s good to look back and take pride in everything we grew this year which contributed to the beauty we create.

Rachel and Brett were married this summer and theirs was a story which captured my heart and had my emotions all over the place. We provided most of the florals, however Rachel’s mum, a florist in Canada wanted to make her bouquet and the boutonnières. Wishing you every happiness
