April this year we lost Archie our 3 year old granson to cancer. December 2nd is his first birthday since his death. His mum and dad would love to have a memorial bench, the cost is high around £4000, £2400 of this the charge from the crem for the grass to sit the bench on the rest is the bench, it would be a great comfort to them if the go fund page achieves this for Archie's birthday.

So many of us wear a mask
We are experts at hiding our pain from our children, from everyone.
We tell you we're ok
We smile, we laugh
We put on a brave face
We look strong
Invincible
We ooze positivity
People tell us we inspire them
Because they couldn't do it

Oh, but they could do it and they would do it because no alternative choice is offered.
Because there is no alternative choice
So we wear the mask, this armour

But it is just a mask
This smiling face
Bravado
Inside we are terrified
And we don't want to say it out loud
So we don't

And, often, that mask only slips in private, when we are alone........

September childhood cancer awareness month.

Archie had this on a few chemo cycles. It was that bad in his mouth he struggled to swallow and we had to suction the mucous out regularly throughout the day. As you can imagine it was awful for him, very uncomfortable and not pleasant having to suction him.

Mucositis is an extremely unpleasant and painful side effect of chemo drugs and radiotherapy treatment to the mouth and neck. This is a temporary issue BUT it can happen every round of chemotherapy with some chemo regimes lasting months and months.

Children are more prone to mucositis with higher doses of chemotherapy being used.

It can occur ANYWHERE along the digestive tract, from top to bottom, mouth to a**s. The pain can be so severe for some children that morphine may be needed to control that pain.
Oral mucositis can cause mouth ulcers, pain and difficulty in swallowing.

Gastrointestinal mucositis occurs in the digestive system and may cause diarrhoea, ulcers in the a**s and re**um, re**al bleeding, tummy pain and nausea. It can also affect the lining of the a**s which is called proctitis.

Sometimes chemo can damage the tastebuds. altering taste which may affect eating and drinking. You will often see children with cancer with a nasogastric tube because of the mucositis, these children are simply unable to eat. Despite their sore mouths parents of younger children have to clean their teeth thoroughly and regularly to prevent the mouth ulcers getting infected which can become a life threatening issue.

September childhood cancer awareness month
In Archie's mum words
Archie had this almost before each chemo. Chemo is usually number dependent and neutrophils been one of them, they have to be at a certain level to be able to have the chemo.
Archie usually had a injection once a day for a few days before chemo. When we were at home mikey did every one of them, I held Archie as Mikey injected him. We knew it’s what needed to be done but it didn’t make it easier. I could never bring myself to do it or have a steady enough hand to. But his dad was there for him and was able to. Archie was always better when we did things instead of the nurses. We’re his parents it was our job to look after him and be there for him

Granulocyte colony stimulating factor is s a man-made form of a natural human hormone. It is a colourless liquid that is either injected under the skin or given into a vein. G-CSF helps the body make infection-fighting white blood cells, called neutrophils.

During chemotherapy blood cell production may be suppressed leading to a drop in the number of neutrophils, a low neutrophil count is called neutropenia and leaves the patient neutropenic and susceptible to infection. G-CSF may be used during chemotherapy so that the neutropenia lasts for a shorter time.

The number of white blood cells usually goes back to a normal level between cycles of chemotherapy, but if the white blood cell levels are too low, chemotherapy may have to be delayed or given in a lower dose. By stimulating the marrow to make white blood cells the risk of infection is reduced and allow chemotherapy treatments to be given on time and at the planned dose. G-CSF is not used in all chemotherapy plans.

Stem cells are blood cells at their earliest stage and usually stay in the bone marrow while they develop into blood cells. Before a stem cell transplant GCSF is used to stimulate the bone marrow to make more stem cells and also to encourage the stem cells to be released from the bone marrow into the blood. The stem cells can then be collected for use in a stem cell transplant. G-CSF may also be used after a stem cell transplant to help speed up the recovery of the new stem cells in the bone marrow.

G- CSF is also used when a person is donating stem cells to increase the number of stem cells in the blood.

Possible Side Effects of G-CSF

A very common complaint from many children who receive G-CSF injections is “bad” pain at the injection site. This pain is felt when the injection is being given with severe stinging and general body discomfort.

G-CSF injections cause the amount in the body to become much higher than normal which may cause some side effects. These are not usually severe and get better when the G-CSF treatment stops.

🎗Bone pain is the most common side effect which may be mild or quite severe and is caused by the bone marrow making blood cells.
🎗Allergic reaction
🎗Red, itchy skin around injection site
🎗Fever and chills
🎗Sickness or reduced appetite
🎗Bowel changes, including constipation or diarrhoea
🎗Left side or tummy discomfort- G-CSF can cause the spleen to get slightly bigger which should go back to its normal size once treatment stops.
🎗Liver changes-This is usually mild and goes back to normal after treatment.
🎗Build-up of fluid

t is heartbreaking to share with you all that last night we lost our brave little man Archie.
Archie mercyfully went down quickly so did not suffer and passed away peacefully at home with Mum Lucy and Dad Mikey at around 11pm. That was the end Lucy and Mikey always hoped for.
We are all devastated and hurting beyond belief at the moment.
