Performing a high quality one person play requires concentration on a level we almost never engage in in 2023.
When was the last time you had to concentrate with all your being for 60 minutes+ without a single second of zoning out, checking your phone or wondering what’s for dinner?
You probably can’t think of a time you actually had to do this, because why would you?! Even doing high stakes tasks such as driving allow the mind to wander and we’ll often zone out at work. Even if we’re in a traditional play, there’s many moments of downtime, while others take centre stage.
So how do we achieve this acute level of focus in a solo play?
In short…. Practicality!
We don’t go on stage hoping to be good or crossing our fingers people will enjoy it. There’s no time for that. Instead, we essentially create a very specific, very practical ‘to do list’ to get through in a very limited time.
The performer’s mind thrives on the specificity of these tasks that all link seamlessly together in a seemingly effortless manner.
As a by product, we force the audience to come with us on an intense journey.
In summary, with a world class level of preparation, we achieve a state of absolute commitment rarely witnessed by people. The results compound to create a very special experience for all.
I can’t wait to teach more of you how to execute this approach!
