Church Hill Theatre

Church Hill Theatre The Church Hill Theatre is over 50 years and is one of Scotland’s leading non-professional theatre

The Church Hill Theatre is a former church in the Morningside area of Edinburgh, designed in the late 1800s by Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc, renowned for his Gothic revival style. Blanc was a prolific architect and antiquarian, who was involved in some high profile restoration projects, including Edinburgh Castle and John Knox House on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. This striking Category B listed

pink sandstone church was converted into a theatre in the 1960s and over nearly 50 years has gained an established reputation as one of Scotland’s leading non-professional theatres. As well as being home to many of Edinburgh’s amateur theatrical companies, it is a popular venue for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Church Hill Theatre is owned by the City of Edinburgh Council and managed by the Assembly Rooms team. Full of character and history, the venue has been refurbished and is available for event hire where performance programming allows. The traditional auditorium seats 353 and is ideal for Theatre performances, concerts, demonstrations, talks and small conferences.

We are delighted to announce that our next production is Blue Remembered Hills by Dennis Potter. Performed at the Church Hill Theatre, Morningside Road, EH10 4DR, from 15th -18th May 2024

This deceptively simple tale relates the activities of seven English children played by adults on a summer afternoon during World War II. In a woods, a field and a barn, they play, fight, fantasise and swagger. Their aggressions, fears, hostilities and rivalries are a microcosm of adult interaction. Easy going Willie tags along as burly Peter bullies Raymond and is challenged by fair minded Paul. Plain Audrey is overshadowed by Angela's prettiness and wreaks her anger on the boys. All of them gang up on the terrified "Donald Duck" who, abused by his mother and ridiculed by his peers, plays a dangerous game of pyromania with tragic results.

This amateur production of “Blue Remembered Hills” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk

The Edinburgh International Festival comes back to Church Hill Theatre on 2nd of August with "The Outrun".
Olivier Award-winning playwright Stef Smith joins forces with Vicky Featherstone, former Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, to reimagine Amy Liptrot’s bestselling memoir. Edinburgh’s producing theatre The Lyceum returns to the International Festival to present this world premiere. A young woman finds herself washed up back home on the Scottish archipelago of Orkney. She has no idea how or if she can rebuild her life after a decade of addiction.

Flashing back and forth between Orkney and London, we get a glimpse into her former urban existence and its intoxicating temptations that pushed her to the point of destruction. She must find a way to navigate the alluring wildlife and wildness of both environments.

Smith's urgent retelling speaks to the impact of isolation and loneliness and – ultimately – the resilience of people.

Tickets will go on public sale on 21 March available through website.
