🎺 Haunting bugle calls: Some say you can hear a phantom bugle or trumpet sounding a warning call.

The sleeping castle is stirring. Be among the first to explore its secrets.
On the Firth of Forth shore lies Barnbougle, a romantic castle locked away for almost a century.
This hidden gem sits majestically on the Dalmeny Estate within 2000 acres of private parkland. The dramatic castle's private beaches are framed by enchanting woodlands. The castle has never been open to the public and has been completely closed for the last 90 years. With majestic reception rooms, antiquarian libraries and sweeping coastal views, Barnbougle Castle is unforgettable - a fairy-tale venue.
The original castle was built in the 13th century to protect the Moubray family from their enemies. It reputedly became a base for piracy and smuggling.
In 1881 Barnbougle was rebuilt by the Victorian Prime Minister, the 5th Earl of Rosebery, into a retreat for study and contemplation. The castle became a vast study-tower, with six libraries and a single bedroom. The glorious barrel-vaulted Banqueting Hall is where The 5th Earl practised speeches. Some of the brightest Victorian minds gathered in this truly spectacular space for conversation and spirited debate. The 5th Earl viewed Barnbougle Castle as his sacred retreat. Only the Earl himself was allowed access and deliveries were made via a sunken road to the cellars. The castle offers a fascinating insight into days gone by. Within this iconic time-capsule remain many of the original furnishings and ancestral portraits. So strong was the 5th Earl’s spirit in Barnbougle that after his death it was simply closed up and preserved, as if he had just walked out.
Now you can walk in and discover the castle’s secrets for yourself. Dine in grandeur in the Banqueting Hall. raise a glass in our Scottish Library and admire the sweeping vistas from the castle terrace. You might like to wander through our spacious grounds or spend time on the castle’s private beach? Explore the wide lawns or lose yourself in our woodlands.
The charming Barnbougle Castle can cater up to 200 people. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering with friends or a ball fit for a princess, our enchanting secret castle is the setting of your dreams.
