The architect styles in Edinburgh have been influenced by classical Greek buildings with Adam and Playfair reproducing symmetrical buildings
The New Town is culturally significant as largest complete example of town planning from the Georgian period anywhere in the world. Its symmetrical streets, elegant squares, and graceful terraces epitomise the architectural ideals of the Enlightenment. The area’s legacy as a centre for intellectual, cultural, and social pursuits continues to shape Edinburgh’s identity.

The personifications of Edina and Athena on the base of the William Playfair statue.

Playfair was one of Edinburgh's most influential 19th century architects and, although he could and did work in other styles, he is best known for some of Edinburgh's grandest Neo-classical buildings including the City Observatory on Calton Hill, the Old College Quadrangle and the National Gallery on the Mound to name just a few.

It was Playfair's work which enabled Edinburgh to style itself, visually, as the 'Athens of the North' and this is what this plaque is representing. On the right we have the figure of Athena, representing Athens. On the left we have the figure of Edina, representing Edinburgh. Edina has a tiara of castle-like battlements and holds a mirror showing that she is reflecting Athena's beauty and is a Modern Athens or the Athens of the North 🏛

I think that shows some common sense; we have massive annual festivals; apart from the tourist, there is a very large number of workers and performers who need reasonably priced accommodation. If this is just some extra money for an owner while they are holiday then super. But too much red tape and costs can really reduce peoples commitment to letting their home for a short period.
