Happy Valentine’s Day! 💙

Did you know that Glasgow is the true city of love?!!

Glasgow’s connection with the holiday and St Valentine began in 1868 when a wealthy French family donated a box labelled “Corpus Valentini Matyris” or “the Body of St Valentine” to the Franciscan order. Monks then brought St Valentine’s bones to the city of Glasgow and placed them at the St Francis Church in the Gorbals as they were impressed by the faith of the locals.

Since then his bones (namely forearm) have been moved to Blessed St John Duns Scotus Chapel in Glasgow where the casket is left on proud display by the church entrance.

Now many young lovers get engaged in the shadow of the casket and statue of St Valentine which is normally decorated with flowers this time of year!

Move over Paris there is now a new City of Love!

This beautiful coastal town has an extremely dark history!

This is beautiful North Berwick.

This now lovely coastal town in East Lothian was once home to the biggest Witch Hunt in the whole of Scotland.

Rumours started to emerge in this small coastal town of a large coven of witches after James VI had a particularly stormy crossing coming from Denmark.

The “coven” was suspected to be as large as 200 Witches with locals believing the coven went down to the shores of North Berwick to speak “rhymes and riddles” into the sea which caused the storm that hit James VI’s ship.

Tragically, a large sum of those accused were executed under the 1536 Witchcraft act.

This chilling tale would lead William Shakespeare to craft the Weird Sisters in his tale of “Macbeth.”

Auld Reikie! thou’rt the canty hole,
A bield for many caldrife soul.

Tomorrow is Burns Night and what better way to celebrate than by reciting some Scot’s poetry and having a wee dram.🥃

Above is an extract from The Daft Days which is not by Mr Rabbie Burns but rather his inspiration Mr Robert Fergusson.

Rabbie Burns got a lot of his inspiration from the young writer who died tragically at the age of only 24! His grave can be found in the Canongate Kirkyard with the epitaph on the grave stone being written by Rabbie Burns himself!

His statue now guards the gates at the Canongate Kirkyard as you can see him walking down the Canongate with a book in hand.

Look at how stunning the sun looks shining through the V&A in Dundee 🌅

Dundee is the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design and is home to the UK’s second V&A.

Standing proudly on the banks of the River Tay, The V&A is a museum dedicated to telling the story of design from around the world.

The building itself has a unique design being created by architect Kengo Kuma.

Kuma’s inspiration for the building was based off the cliffs on Scotland’s north-eastern coastline.

The V&A is free to enter for permanent exhibitions and provides a unique insight into the fascinating world of design!

Did you know that our beautiful Arthur’s Seat is actually an extinct Volcano!!🌋

The hill was formed by volcanic systems of the early Carboniferous period with lava samples from the hill dating back to being 341 million years old!

The hill today famously resembles a lazing lion but actually the “head” and “hump” of the lion were at one point in time the vents of the extinct volcano.

Now Arthur’s Seat is a popular walking destination for both Edinburgh locals and tourists, providing beautiful views over the entire city!

Definitely a must for your 2025 Scotland Bucket List.

A very Happy Hogmanay and Lang May Your Lum Reek from all of us here at Scotland Welcome!

Whilst we are very sad that Hogmanay 2024 has had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions, we would like to post a picture of our beautiful firework celebration from past years!

Did you know the Balmoral Clock always runs a couple of minutes fast to make sure travellers don’t miss their train at the neighbouring Waverley Train station.

The only time the clock is set to the right time is on Hogmanay night so people don’t accidentally start signing Auld Lang Syne at the wrong time! 🎶
