Did you know that beneath Sue Ryder Charity shop in Evesham, there lurks a dark secret ?

This site is where Evesham Gaol housed Quakers. In 1648, Local Magistrate, Edward Pitway, saved the lives of some of the Quakers who were being punished for refusing to swear an oath on religious grounds. Instead of letting the baying mob deal with them, he sentenced them to this tiny prison cell. One of those Quakers, Humphrey Smith, gives an account of the conditions, below:-

‘The prison or hole where we are all kept is not twelve foot square and one gaol hole belonging to it four inches wide, wherein we take our food and straw to lie on. And we are forced to burn a candle every day by reason the prison is so dark and so close; and so many in one little room, and so little air, with the stink of our own dung … Sometimes, when the days were hot, the breath of some prisoners was almost stopped … and when the days were at their coldest, we have no place to make a fire or to walk to keep our bodies warm’.

Little wonder that the buildings surrounding this pit are now haunted !

GHOST NEWS! The ghost of the Northwick Hotel has been spotted! A member of staff was alone in the function room very recently, when she felt a presence in the room with her. She turned around and saw a man in modern dress, standing by the doorway! As she watched, he slowly dissipated into thin air!

We think we know who this is, and will be trying to contact him on our mini ghost hunt on 4/8/24. Why don’t you join us? See our pinned post for details!

With the Battle of Evesham anniversary approaching, let’s look at a haunting in Evesham from that time…

Back in Victorian times, late one night, a man was walking from Swine Lane (Vine St) to Horse Lane (Swan St) along High Street. As he reached the crossroads (where the Swanne Inn is) he heard the whinnying of a horse. He turned around and saw a knight, atop a battle horse, charging up the High Street towards Green Hill. As if this wasn’t enough to the shock the poor man, as the ghostly rider went thundering past, he noticed that the Knight was missing his head!

This knight has been seen on several occasions in other spots around the town centre area - we have our own theory as to who he is, but you’d have to come on the ghost walk to find out!

Don’t forget our brand new ghost walk and mini ghost hunt on 4/8/24 - the energies will be high as it’s the anniversary of the battle ! See the pinned post above for more information.

As we approach the General Election, I thought it might be interesting to investigate the ghosts of 10 Downing Street.

David joined Number 10 in the year 2000 and didn’t believe in the supernatural - this is what happened to him in the Small Dining Room, shortly after he started….

‘We were doing a recruitment exercise for a new member of staff and I had booked the Small Dining Room to do that interview.

I arrived very early, about six o’clock in the morning and rather than going straight to my office I walked up to the dining room just to check the table and chairs were positioned correctly.

The early hour meant the room was in total darkness. With no natural light coming from the windows and that I hadn’t switched the electric lights on inside the room I was reliant on the wash of light from behind me in the service corridor and just stuck my head in the room.
I was immediately conscious of some light from underneath the doors that go through to the State Dining Room and knowing we’d had a couple of incidents of lights being left on overnight I moved into the room to check this.
As I crossed the small dining room to the two large doors that open up into the State Dining Room I passed the end of the table, and absolutely jumped out of my skin because someone walked past me! I’m talking about a space of a couple of feet, but because of the darkness I hadn’t seen the person. On spinning round, the light from the door I had entered through showed I was on my own.
What really got my attention was that I heard the sound of a taffeta dress moving/rustling, and without wishing to sound dramatic, definitely felt a presence. Nothing malicious, or otherwise, but it definitely felt like someone was with me.

So, about 2 hours later, I was joined by one of my colleagues and still buzzing with the earlier experience related this to him, to which he said,
‘Oh, you have seen the ghost?’
and I responded,
Yeah right! What ghost?

He then proceeded to tell me that there is a lady in a white ball-gown who goes between the State Dining Room and the Pillared Room!
With the short period of time I had worked at Number 10, this was news to me, and as I said, I’m the kind of person is sceptical of this kind of thing without some kind of evidence.
Except that it happened to me!

I can’t explain it.
It’s something I don’t often relate to people because it still sends shivers up my spine.

Since then I've read up in a few London ghost books, it’s all mentioned, so maybe, just maybe, I've met the Lady in White!

The following week, I made a point of coming down to the state rooms after evening receptions when the lights were off, to try and re-create the moment, and, here I am, thirteen years later and, I haven’t had any further contact’.

Anne Bradford, an author well-versed in sharing eerie tales of the supernatural, has, in her books, delved into the world of ghost stories from the Vale

Among them is a chilling account involving the renowned historical figure, Simon de Montfort.

It is widely known that de Montfort met a gruesome fate, his body mutilated after the Battle of Evesham. Anne recounts a particularly disturbing incident where his head and hands were taken as "trophies" and sent to Lady Mortimer at Wigmore. A messenger later claimed to have witnessed the severed hands clasped in prayer above the altar at the abbey next to Wigmore Castle, as a priest conducted a solemn ceremony. Shocked by the eerie sight, Lady Mortimer promptly returned the hands to Evesham, wanting no part in such a macabre display.

Did you know Evesham once had a castle ?

Constructed in the heart of Bengeworth, Worcestershire during the mid-12th century, Bengeworth Castle stood as a formidable fortification. At that time, the influential Beauchamp family held sway over much of Worcestershire from their stronghold at Elmley. Bengeworth, situated east of Evesham with a connecting bridge, was a valuable estate jointly owned by the Abbots of Evesham and the Sheriffs of Worcester. However, contentious legal battles often arose over the ownership of this strategic property.

Hear the rest of this story (with some ghosts thrown in) on our event and NEW ghost walk, on 4th August! See pinned post for booking details.

Has your cat ever spooked you out by staring at the ceiling or looking at something in the corner of the room that you just can’t see?

Cats are often seen as mystical creatures due to their graceful bodies and captivating gaze that can mesmerize anyone. However, there is another intriguing aspect that adds to their enigmatic nature: their ability to see what humans cannot.

Research has shown that cats possess a unique vision known as psychedelic vision, allowing them to see patterns and details that are invisible to the human eye. This extraordinary ability is attributed to their capability to see ultraviolet light.

Scientists have discovered that cats, along with other animals like dogs, have the ability to perceive ultraviolet light, which is beyond the visual range of humans. This enables them to see things like stripes on flower petals or intricate patterns on bird wings that are otherwise unseen by us.

Ronald Douglas, a biology professor at City University London, has conducted studies on this fascinating topic and explained that there are numerous examples of objects reflecting UV rays that UV-sensitive animals can detect, while the structure of the human eye prevents us from perceiving them.

In essence, cats possess a unique and mysterious vision that allows them to see a world of hidden details and patterns, adding to their aura of mysticism and intrigue.

Next time you see your cat staring into space, you’ll know why! He’s looking at the something the human eye can’t see! 👻
