The lower dungeon of Warwick Castle is an oubliette, a place where prisoners were cast and abandoned, often never to be remembered again.

An oubliette, by definition, is a hidden dungeon accessible solely through a trapdoor in its ceiling. These were commonly found in medieval castles and served as a means of incarcerating a wide range of individuals, from political detainees to common thieves.

These spaces were exceedingly small, dimly lit, and cramped chambers within a dungeon, offering no escape route due to their sole entrance/exit.

The term "oubliette" finds its origins in the French word "oublie," which means "to forget." When prisoners were consigned to an oubliette, they were effectively left to be forgotten by the outside world.

What a great night last night with our guests (now friends !) on our Ghost Walk and mini Ghost Hunt at the Northwick. Had lots of fun and the door opened completely on its own one point. People were touched, pushed and felt things, and lots of information was given. Thank you to Dawn and her team at the Northwick and of course, to our lovely guests.

Did you know that beneath Sue Ryder Charity shop in Evesham, there lurks a dark secret ?

This site is where Evesham Gaol housed Quakers. In 1648, Local Magistrate, Edward Pitway, saved the lives of some of the Quakers who were being punished for refusing to swear an oath on religious grounds. Instead of letting the baying mob deal with them, he sentenced them to this tiny prison cell. One of those Quakers, Humphrey Smith, gives an account of the conditions, below:-

‘The prison or hole where we are all kept is not twelve foot square and one gaol hole belonging to it four inches wide, wherein we take our food and straw to lie on. And we are forced to burn a candle every day by reason the prison is so dark and so close; and so many in one little room, and so little air, with the stink of our own dung … Sometimes, when the days were hot, the breath of some prisoners was almost stopped … and when the days were at their coldest, we have no place to make a fire or to walk to keep our bodies warm’.

Little wonder that the buildings surrounding this pit are now haunted !

Here you can see, the trigger object left in the Bathroom has clearly moved!

Ghost Hunt at Woodchester Mansion 24/5/24. Woodchester Mansion is rumored to be a hub of spiritual activity, captivating those with a sensitive soul. Visitors have reported hearing a ghostly girl singing a haunting Irish melody, the faint echoes of 1940s music, and catching whiffs of candles that have just been put out in the chapel. Mysterious loud bangs and phantom footsteps add to the eerie atmosphere, despite there being no visible presence causing them. Last night we began with a quick scout of the building. We’ve been here several times over the years, and the energy feels different each time we go! We felt the bathroom, kitchen, chapel, cellar and 3rd floor were the best places to be, so we did vigils in each room. We all felt unwell in the bathroom. The presence of a lady was detected, and one of our team picked up on a man with a handle bar moustache who was worried about money, and felt very angry. In the kitchen the Franks Box picked up American and German voices and a team member was shoved from the back - twice! The chapel was fairly quiet, as was the upper floor, but the cellar produced some fantastic table tipping with the presence of a man wearing an apron, who didn’t want us there … All in all, a great night of ghostly fun!

We will be around this afternoon at the Love Evesham Day handing out flyers and generally being spooky. Look out for Mr and Mrs Scaretaker !
