🥇 Team GB 🥇

Only 3 days into the Olympics and Team GB are already making incredible victories! Our first Gold medal was acheived by the equestrian riders and one in particular has made history, Laura Collett and London 52 received the lowest Olympic dressage score with 17.5 beating the record 19.3, held by David O’Connor and Custom Made since the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000!

We look forward to seeing what else our incredible team achieves during the 2024 Paris Olympics 🥇

⭐️ Fun Fact Friday ⭐️

It’s the Olympics! We cannot wait to see how well Team GB do! 🇬🇧

Let’s look back on some very interesting facts about the Olympics…

You may remember learning this in school, the first Olympics took place in the year 776BC. It originally began as part of an Ancient Greek festival, it celebrated Zeus who is the Greek God of sky and weather. Unlike our modern Olympics, these games sometimes lasted up to 6 months! They certainly didn’t get bored easily!

The games included wrestling, boxing, the long jump, javelin, discus and chariot racing. Would you like to see Chariot racing brought back?

In 393 AD the Olympic Games were cancelled, it didn’t start back up for over 1,500 years! This was all due to Emperor Theodosius who demanded it cancelled after stating it was not in keeping with his Christian Country. The original Olympics were mainly focused around Pagan Religious celebrations.

It seemed the Olympics were all but an event in history, until, in 1896 when Baron Pierre de Coubertin revived the games. He called this the Modern Olympics! This is what we now know to take place every 4 years.

The Olympic torch is a reminder of the Greek Origins of the games. Did you know that an Olympic torch has flown on planes, gone underwater and even scaled Mount Everest all whilst staying alight!

The torch is always lit by the sun in Olympia, Greece as this is where the first games were held. It is then passed from torch to torch in a massive international relay that ends within the host city.

Until 1912 the first place medals were made out of Solid Gold, these were incredibly heavy and also used a lot of material. They now are coated and contain 6 grams of Solid Gold. The first place medals at the Paris games this year will also contain a piece of the original iron from the iconic Eiffel Tower, how cool is that!?

Congratulations to Josie and Jordan who recently celebrated their big day with us at The Lord Haldon Hotel. 💒

We loved hosting for you and your guests! Ever wondered what a wedding is like with us? Read Josie and Jordan’s testimonial below.

It was such an amazing venue, everyone loved it! We had such a large wedding party but it all ran so smoothly even with a slight hiccup near the end of the night (the card machine was down) but it was still such an incredible day. Everyone had the best time. Food was amazing and the rooms were clean, spacious and looked great. We cannot thank you all enough.

Special thanks to photographer RobGrist photography for the incredible photos.

We had many wonderful bees in our gardens today, happily pollinating, such wonderful creatures that are incredibly important for our biodiversity!

Remember, if you ever see a bee in need, offer sugar water. Never offer honey. 🍯

⭐️ Fun, Fact, Friday ⭐️

Do you remember the green shield stamps? Introduced in 1958 by Richard Tompkins, the stamps were similar to the likes of modern day loyalty cards and could be exchanged for goods from selected stores. The stamps were often given with catalogues, detailing how many would be needed to “purchase” the different items.

For only a few years the stamps were so popular that they were referenced to in rock songs however, they stamps suffered when Tesco ceased to use it, as part of price-cutting policies. This became standard, nationwide. Despite their efforts to continue, the company could no longer maintain their stamps being used and the catalogues quickly became a discounted book with people being able to pay for items with a mixture of cash and stamps. This soon became only cash and in 1991 the green stamps lost their value altogether. The operation was rebranded as Argos and in July 1973 the company entered into liquidation in 2002. Sainsbury’s now owns Argos.

If you or your parents ever used green stamps, what was the best thing you or they bought? Let us know in the comments!

As it’s lunch time…

Did you know that the most sandwiches made in one hour is 65,595 and was achieved by King David Linksfield School (South Africa), in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 23 September 2022. King David Linksfield School organized an event as part of a Year 12 project called Matric Gives Back.

This is an annual project in which the matriculating students give back to the community around them.
The attempt took place on the school field.

We may not have made that number but we definitely made some pretty tasty sandwiches! What's your favourite sandwich? Let us know below

He grew up in the nearby town of Newton Abbot and attended South Dartmoor Community College. His youth Football career began at Buckland Athletic, shortly followed by Newton Town FC before he began playing at Exeter City. He progressed through the Exeter City academy and played with them until 2017 when he moved to Brentford.

Haldon House

Haldon House (pronounced: "Hall-don") on the eastern side of the Haldon Hills in the parishes of Dunchideock and Kenn, near Exeter in Devon, England, was a large Georgian country house largely demolished in the 1920s. The surviving north wing of the house, comprising the entrance front of the stable block, consists of two cuboid lodges linked by a screen pierced by a Triumphal Arch, with later additions, and serves today as the "Lord Haldon Hotel". The house was originally flanked by two such paired pavilions, as is evident from 19th century engravings.
