McChuills artist profile: BLACK CELEBRATION
Love Depeche Mode? Don’t get to see them very often? Well, we’ve got the next best thing coming in November. Black Celebration are the UK’s #1 tribute to the ‘Mode and will be performing in Glasgow for the very first time right here in McChuills.
Expect a full two-hour set of all your favourite hits and deep cuts, including Enjoy The Silence, Personal Jesus, Stripped, Walking In My Shoes, I Feel You, Just Can’t Get Enough and more, as well as some of the early material that Dave and Martin haven’t played themselves in years.
Support on the night will come from the legendary RetroDave, who will be doing an ‘80s electronic DJ set to get the party started.
Tickets are on sale now on Ticketsource and you can get them via the link in the comments below…

We also took the time to have a wee chat with Black Celebration too, about all things Deprche Mode and more. Enjoy.
What can folk expect from yr McChuills set?
It’s always interesting to put a setlist together for a venue. We can’t leave out all those huge anthems and the classic tracks that people expect, but in addition to those we like include some lesser heard tracks. So expect some album tracks, B-sides and some re-workings. Programming from scratch allows us to put something together we think will work well live.
Why Depeche Mode?
Serendipity. Depeche were the standout electronic band of that time and we just wanted to see if we could produce something like that without having any prior musical training or interest in music production. Steve just wanted to program the tracks and play synth and Jeff was going to be the singer. As it happened when we started to record some tracks it transpired that Steve sounded a bit like Dave and Jeff a bit like Mart. It’s not our fault. It was written in the stars above.
How did you discover them and what’s the attraction for you?
Enjoy the Silence. Saw that video on the Chart Show one Saturday morning and they were that band we'd been looking for. Anthemic music, intersting lyrics, great electronics, huge leads and a super cool image. Then you get that great period when you get to discover the back catalogue. Everything they had done was interesting and achievable with a little effort.
Other than the Basildon lads, who have been the biggest influences on you as musicians?
Sound wise we're fans of the heavier electronics like Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, IAMX and The Prodigy. But if you check out lead singer Steve's CD collection it hasn’t changed in 30 years. Japan, David Sylvian, Adam Ant, U2, A-Ha, R&B and funk! (Yes Candy by CAMEO is one of his all-time favourite tracks)
What’s yr band history? Where have you played, who with etc?
Far too many places to mention really as we've been performing for over 20 years. We do sometimes team up with other Tribute Acts, these have included tributes to The Cure, Gary Numan, Erasure, Joy Division and Marilyn Manson to name a few…
What was yr debut gig?
As a band, it was a place called The Foundry in Birmingham which was an unofficial convention by our amazing friend Lisa. To say we were nervous would be an understatement as none of us were performers and we’d only just started using synths and programming. As BC, I’m thinking we played a place in Soho (a big jazz club from back in the day where we believe The Beatles had played in the 60s). Can’t recall the name but it was a tiny little venue and we had to input to their sound system by going with an RCA cable into the DJ’s turntable setup. There was also some ‘tension’ when we were not paid what we’d been promised after having driven 170 miles in a van we’d had to hire to move the gear.
What was yr best gig?
Couldn’t name a best gig. We’re incredibly lucky in the fact that wherever we turn up people are just awesome.
What was yr worst gig?
Birkenhead. Clearly hadn’t been promoted, we were approached by staff whilst performing to play “the famous ones” about 5 songs in as the owner wasn’t ”happy”. Then a couple of songs further in the pi**ed up owner at the front of the stage started effing and blinding that he was going to ‘shut it down’ if essentially we didn’t drop the set and play Just Can’t Get Enough for the remaining hour. Fair to say we won't be returning there.
What would be yr ideal gig?
Outdoors. We’ve never performed a festival but it would have been nice to do.
Top five Depeche Mode songs to play out?
Walking in My Shoes
Stripped
Never let Me Down Again
Rush
Enjoy the Silence
What’s next for you?
Who knows? Music has changed and arguably not for the better. When we began we tought ourselves how to play, how to program, how to perform…all in an arena where many people didn’t appreciate tribute bands and the work that went into doing a single track. Today those detractors have been proven kinda right. You don’t need to spend two months getting a great backing track from scratch with the tech available. Just take the vocal of the original recording and use the artists original recording as backing.
Why should folk come to McChuills when yr playing?
We're the definitive tribute to Depeche Mode and you won't just get the classics, we play tracks that Depeche Mode either never (or very rarely) play live. It will be two hours of Depeche Mode Heaven…
Black Celebration play McChuills on Friday November 29th. Tickets are available in the comments via Ticketsource.
