Day Four World Celebrants Week 2021.

Today we are celebrating the power of our celebrant community. By being part of SICA we are able to draw on the strengths and experiences of our fellow members. Our members may all work independently delivering unique and uplifting ceremonies but we share a lot of common goals and values. We share our best practice, we support each other through our peer review process, we participate in celebrant lead training, but most of all we have a safe space to seek advice and guidance from our colleagues.

We are so grateful for our SICA community, together we are definitely stronger.

What noisy and wonderfully emotional scenes here at Strathcarron as The Glasgow Ladies Who Ride, Bike Club pay one of our patients a visit.

Not having a funeral is one of her wishes, so her friends hopped on their bikes to provide her with a wonderful send off.

She was thrilled to have the opportunity to say her final goodbyes.

The power of wishes...thinking about the end of your life can be difficult and emotional. However, taking some time to plan ahead and consider your wishes can make things less stressful for you and your family and friends when the time comes.

If you have a family member with dementia, please consider using the .

The Herbert Protocol is a form which family members/carers can download from the Police Scotland website & fill in with the person's details: it includes a description, a photo, next of kin/family contacts, but also places with meaning to the person, perhaps a childhood home, old school or workplace, or favourite walks - places someone with dementia may gravitate to for comfort.

The form is then kept in a safe place in the person's home (often in a jar in the fridge for easy to access). Family members can keep an electronic version – (perhaps in their email drafts). Then, should they have to make a missing person report - and we hope they never have to - it can be easily and quickly sent to police and help officers locate vulnerable missing people with dementia as quickly as possible.

This work has been supported by Alzheimer Scotland, Health & Social Care Scotland, and the Scottish Government.

You can read more about the Herbert Protocol, and download the form here: http://ow.ly/zcaV50GdXTU

How to help bereaved children understand grief
Often, people will talk about the ‘different stages of grief’, suggesting that everyone’s grief follows the same path through the stages of grief and that their grief will get smaller over time. https://buff.ly/3iFYqmh

What a great story.
It's a really difficult topic. No one wants to talk about their own funeral. It's a very difficult time for the bereaved, so whilst the conversation may be hard to have while you are alive, think about how much better it will be for your family when the day comes.

On this day 40 years ago, 21st April 1981, Strathcarron Hospice welcomed its first patient.

During the last 40 years we have cared for great grandparents, parents and loved ones with specialist compassionate care.

None of this would be possible without our local community. Today we thank you all for your enduring support and dedication; our staff, volunteers, supporters and friends. We have achieved so much since the dream of bringing a hospice here was realised and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for your love and support.

We Are Strathcarron.
