I’m sure all of our @flowersfromthefarm colleagues would agree that this noise is absolutely the noise of spring!
Is there anything more satisfying than playing with home grown tulips?

All the B’s today! Sound on for…
🐦⬛ Birdsong
🐝 Bees
🚌 Bus 🙈
This pussy willow is alive with bees. The sounds coming out of this small patch on the farm is a delight. Almost felt bad harvesting some for a customer. Almost. They’ve got plenty - promise!
And the birds…delightful. Sadly the no.16 bus also decided to charge past as the camera was rolling - never mind. It’s a good reminder that we are on the main Folkestone/Canterbury bus route so you can always be extra eco and get the bus to see us!

When this venture was first discussed at Readman HQ and a polytunnel was proposed Deputy Readman thought it unnecessary. He may have had a point. It isn’t a an absolute must have, you can still grown fabulous flowers without one. But my word look at the difference in stem length!
For the fact fans out there, these anemones are the same variety, started and grown at the same time. Both are their second year of flowering. Both were supplied by @peter_nyssen and both are beautiful. (Also if we’re honest we often find we cut the long stems shorter 🙈)

Dead or not dead?
A few years ago a glorious ex-colleague of Junior Readman was a bit surprised when they were informed she never cuts back anything until the very end of winter/beginning of spring. There were concerns about the garden looking untidy. Well this is true. It probably does look untidy.
But what it also does is provide habitat for insects to over-winter and it means that the new tender growth coming up has a bit of protection from the winter weather. By leaving the old foliage from last season we’ve given this years new growth a few degrees of warmth and kept off some of the wind chill. Meaning these new leave will race away as soon as spring erupts around us.
So if you can bare to have an unkempt look for a few more weeks just leave the old stuff alone and you’ll start to find more life than you think if you play dead or not dead in your garden! xx

The direction that you cut is actually important as well. To give your rose the best start it’s considered best practice to cut on the diagonal. That means that the stem won’t have a flat tabletop which water can sit on top of and cause any rot or mould to set in.
Cutting out any wispy, weedy stems will help the overall sharp and vigour of your rose. Likewise the shape that you leave the shrub in is important too. The reason we want it open in the middle is to allow as much airflow in and around the plant. This will help reduce disease and infection. Black spot is an ever present threat with roses, but allowing good ventilation will mean there’s less breeding ground for some of the nasties who’ve got it in for you roses out there!
Don’t panic if you think you’ve gone too hard. Remember these guys we’re showing you in all our videos were bare root roses that have only had one season of growth. Given how many flowers they produced from such small twigs you can rest assured you’ll still get something happening with your roses, even if you think you have cut them too hard.
A very experienced gardener (who loves a good prune!) once said to Junior Readman “call that pruning? You’ve just tickled it. Give it a good go over, make it uncomfortable and it will be forced into action” and she was not wrong.
Pruning also shocks the plant and it responds by throwing up more stems - good job they don’t know that’s what we want otherwise chances are they’d roll over and give up!

Christmas video 1/2…
As we neither have the time nor the creativity to do you all a Christmas video here’s our personal favourite which was first discovered when JR attended a last minute church service in Darlington many years back. Props to the vicar who spent about 6 minutes putting up the old projector screen and reassuring us it would all be worth it!! Oh how right he was!!
No idea what @brianmayforreal and the lads would make of it! But it’s our favourite! It’s also too long for one instagram reel so we’ve put it into two. But please do go and find it on YouTube to share with the fam on Christmas Day!! You’re looking for Bethlehem Rahapsody!
Catch the rest in video 2/2!!
Merry Christmas gang!! xx
