This time last year at the allotment ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ…

Beds bursting with flowers and rows full of veg.

Missing my buckets full of flowers and our trug full of veg this year!

The vegetable patch is now being enjoyed by someone new, whilst the flower patch is currently a shadow of it's former self. As the remaining flowers finish I'm covering the beds. In the Autumn we will lift the last of the perennial plants and bring them back to the new garden.

Meanwhile, in the new garden - this is the area I plan to create my new flower patch in. Somewhere amongst the bracken, ferns, brambles, stinging nettles, rodgersia, hypericum, tree saplings and ground-covering something or other.

Last week I chopped back the bracken to gauge the potential space available. I planned to start digging up some of the ferns to make a dent - I didn't get very far - we have heavy clay soil. Needless to say the part I cleared still looks the same as it did a week later, other than the addition of new fern fronds and fresh bramble growth ๐ŸŒฟ

It's a stop and start long term project this one ๐Ÿ˜†

The garden table - the current workshop ๐ŸŒฟ

I feel very lucky to have had a workshop at the old house - my own space where I could condition, design, create, find inspiration... surrounded by my vases, jugs, knick-knacks... with everything I needed to hand, behind my beautiful green front door.

Here at the new house I'm currently lacking a dedicated workspace, but I do have a beautiful garden. So I'm enjoying working within it - fresh air and a backdrop of garden delights, with birdsong as my soundtrack. Unless of course it's too hot, too cold or too wet, in which case it'll be the dining table!

With all my things dotted about here, there and everywhere, it can be a little disorganised for the brain sometimes, but one day I will have my own workshop again, somewhere in the garden, and it will be wonderful โ˜บ๏ธ

I wonder what colour the front door will be?!? Or perhaps I'll mix it up...

Last week I had the privilege of creating the most beautiful hand-tied posies for a natural burial.

Bright, colourful, natural British flowers to celebrate the life of a special lady whom, I humbly learnt, lived life to the full, and for her family, to make them smile.

The posies were shared by family and friends at the burial ground and the flowers then scattered.

Just perfect ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Sweet Williams - an absolute favourite of mine last year.

They were a treat, and actually a wonderful surprise because they looked soooooo weedy for suuuuuch a long time. I was convinced I'd ruined them. And then they kept on giving for months! Oh it was a joy.

My visit to the flower patch this morning reminded me just how happy they made me.

There's a handful of plants that have come back this year which is fabulous, although the bed is patchy now so it won't be quite the show stopper it was last year. Some stems are beginning to flower and they will be celebrated by making their way into an order for next week ๐Ÿ’

I will definitely grow sweet williams in the new garden in the future, they will look amazing here. I just have to get organised to sow them on time. They are biennial so need to be sown May-July for flowering the following year... and I always miss the boat ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

These guys didn't flower in 2022 as planned because I didn't sow them when I should have (only 5 months late!) - instead, they used the time to beef up and flowered in 2023. A long time coming but soooooo worth the wait.

The plants that remain at the flower patch will move to the garden later this year ๐ŸŒธ

Jolly happy to have unpacked the flower press ๐Ÿฉต

The prettiest little petals living on...

Snippets of a season captured in one and enjoyed in another.

The flowers I press make their way into your arrangements - my notecards, message cards, gift tags that accompany your flowers. Natural beauty preserved and appreciated, a little touch that makes me smile every time, I hope it makes you smile too.

The pressed petals that are damaged or too delicate... well, they end up as beautiful confetti!

Forget-me-nots are my favourite flower to press, shortly followed by Delphinium. Not limited to blue by the way... although I notice there seems to be a theme here ๐Ÿ˜†

Let's talk about funeral flowers...

When I started floristry the idea of funeral flowers filled me with fear. Not only was I worried how I would cope creating arrangements under such emotional and personal circumstances, I very much had the same image of funeral flowers in my mind as a lot of people do when it comes to sympathy flowers - without me even explaining what I mean, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean.

My floristry, my understanding of flowers and my awareness of the impact the floral industry can have on the environment has evolved hugely within the past 4 years. The more I developed the style of floristry I loved and experimented with sustainable floristry practices, the more comfortable I became with my flower design and creating arrangements that had minimal impact on the earth. The more I engaged with local growers and suppliers of British flowers the more passionate I became about my floristry ethos. The more flowers I grew myself, the more at peace I became with my own place in the floral business and in my decision to use ONLY British flowers and foliage in my work.

I am no longer scared of funeral flowers because I am not trying to recreate an image of what they 'ought' to be. They are beautiful, meaningful flowers, that reflect the seasons, celebrate the ingredients, capture the small details and represent the essence of an individual and their family.

My farewell flowers are 100% British and are created with products that are kind to the environment. I do not use floral foam or single use plastics. It's very important to me that my designs break down as naturally as possible.

Here pictured, a pair of spring hand-tied sheaves designed to lay together on the coffin. The family wished to take the flowers home with them afterwards so I wrapped the stems in moss and bound with hessian to maximise freshness. These arrangements were so incredibly beautiful and I feel they encapsulate everything my farewell flowers are about.

If I can assist you or your family with a special floral tribute or gesture please do let me know. Further details about my flowers for farewells can be found on the website ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

The bench, the bucket and the blooms...

These pretty faces came back with me from the flower patch last weekend. Delighted to be enjoying them in the new house, equally happy to have another bench for my photos!

At the allotment, the perennials, biannuals and the self seeders (oooh who's it going to be!?) will continue to grace us with their flowering this year, but I won't be sowing or planting anything new because we will gradually start moving plants to the new garden later in the year.

The daffodils are pot luck this spring as I lifted and replanted a good few due to changing beds about, and then the slugs and snails seem to have gone to town on them before they opened - these were the best of the bunch but wonderful none the less! The tulips are interesting little creatures - they are the breakaway bulbs of the original tulips I planted 3 years ago that I missed when pulling by the bulb last year. These were only ever going to be for me as I knew they would be on the weedy side - still beautiful and now on the dining table๐ŸŒท

I can't wait to buy and plant new bulbs in the new garden in the Autumn. I'll need to reign myself in though ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Hello from our new home in Plaistow, West Sussex ๐Ÿก

We are settling into country and village life very nicely. Positioned close to the Surrey border we are not too far away from the familiarity of the old stomping ground, but thrilled to now be living a more rural life and exploring pastures new. It feels as though we've been here longer than a few short weeks.

We loved the new house and garden from the moment we viewed it. It had been empty for a while but it had a warm soul and the garden was incredible. Nature was starting to take over but that was all part of the charm. We could feel it had been a well loved home and garden, but now in need of full modernisation and some tlc. We are very much looking forward to making it a special home once again.

With the most beautiful established garden to enjoy and experiment with, there is still so much to discover and unearth. So many wonderful trees, shrubs and plants. What a treat. And to get to know it throughout the Spring is just ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ. We are gradually claiming it back piece by piece from the ridiculously giant brambles and the ivy (I'm keeping my eye on the ivy trails - everything has potential!), but the beauty to come is going to be a joy.

Loving countryside walks from the doorstep, birdwatching from the sofa, a constant soundtrack of bird song, the odd moo and the cock-a-doodle-doos. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but every day we are appreciating our new surroundings.

Over the next month I'll be working on shaping the business into what I imagine it looking like for this next exciting chapter. With space to grow flowers for cutting in our own garden from next year I can't wait to get planning on that. Once I've found my feet a little more within the new area, and the wrist has proved to me it's up to the job properly this time, I will start flowering again. I'll keep you posted๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿชป๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒณ

I will share to my stories some of the garden treats that have emerged already ๐Ÿ™Œ

Hello Everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹

Happy 1st February!

It's probably a little late for me to greet you with Happy New Year but I hope you are settling into 2024 nicely.

Usually by now I'm nice and organised with my plan for the year ahead - the new diary, new stationery, new ideas, new flower plans, new seeds - what to grow, where to grow, how to grow - imagining, designing, creating...

Well, I have the new diary, plenty of new ideas and I'm imagining all sorts of wonderful things to come!

But the rest, not so much ๐Ÿ˜†

Because... things are going to look a little different this year. We will be moving! ๐Ÿก

I look forward to sharing more on the move very soon, but in the meantime, as we dot the I's, cross the T's and navigate a period of limbo, will be taking a short break from flowering. I'll keep you up to date as the next few months unfold.

We'll treat ourselves to a greenhouse we can both fit into next time ๐ŸŒฑ

"Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go"

I love this quote. I saw it the other day and thought yes! that's so true ๐Ÿ‚

As the flower patch begins to wind down for the year I'm taking this as an opportunity to have a little break myself.

Back in July I put the floristry tools down to concentrate on recovering from an injury to my wrist. Recovery is going really well and I had hoped to use the final burst of blooms in October to offer a beautiful selection of gift flowers one last time before the season came to an end... but this week the flower patch has noticeably slowed and my wrist needs a little more time before the floristry hands are active again.

So, it's time to say farewell to The Entwine Collection 2023 ๐Ÿ’ THANK YOU to everybody who ordered my bouquets, bunches or posies this year - I'm incredibly grateful you continue to choose me and my flowers โ˜บ๐Ÿ™

I'll still be here, embracing the joy of Autumn at the flower patch and pottering around with pretty things in the background, but for now, the day to day floristry remains on hold for a little while longer and the business brain is going to have a little rest too.

British flowers are still going strong so please do continue to visit to find your local growers and suppliers of wonderfully joyful autumnal flowers.

Happy Autumn! ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ‚

The flower patch on it's third anniversary...

September petals basking in every second of sunshine, soaking up every moment of warmth.

It's been a challenging growing season this year, but what grows blooms and what blooms can be enjoyed, and to me that's the most important thing ๐ŸŒฑ

Rainbow on the bench ๐ŸŒˆ

Amaranthus, Achillea, Strawflower and Statice harvested this weekend for drying.

Last Winter all dried flower ingredients featured in my festive arrangements came from the flower patch. One of my aims this year was to grow more flowers for drying in order to produce a larger volume for me to use throughout the Autumn-Winter period. Although a couple of varieties were unsuccessful, the majority were and I'm delighted to be going home with harvests that look like this ๐Ÿ˜

I'm not yet sure how I will use my dried flowers this year... but that's what's wonderful - their beauty lives on and there is time โ™ก

Unruly beauty...

In the warm, dewy haze this morning I walked over to the allotment.

Mostly with the intention to harvest some veg, but also with a plan to deadhead, a little. Maybe pull a few towering weeds, a little. Perhaps reinstate the paths, a little. Generally regain some order, a little. Not all of these achievable in one go of course, but to make a start, somewhere... with the good(ish) hand.

First, the vegetable patch. I filled the trug with tomatoes, beans, courgettes, cucumbers. Just glorious. Job done โœ”

Moving to the flower patch...
I walked up and down, I admired, I thought about where to start, I admired some more, I took a few photos, I filmed the bees, I sat on the bench, I walked around a little more, I admired a little bit more, I couldn't decide what to do first... and then it was getting warm... so I decided today just wasn't the day for those jobs ๐Ÿ˜†

Welcome

Hello, Iโ€™m Natalie.

I have always loved surrounding myself with beautiful flowers.

I enjoy seeing them, smelling them, arranging them and giving them to others.

In 2019 I decided it was time to turn my love of flowers into working with flowers.
