Look how glamorous our bees are!

I saw this for the first time a couple of weeks ago on a common mallow that had self seeded and popped up in the patch, that bee was purple after it had finished donning its pollen!

I don't know what's different about this year but there seem to be so many more insects around (I saw do a video about the banning of a particular insecticide/pesticide...could that be it?!).

All manner of insects, some I've not seen before, and it's fascinating to find out all about them, lots of us have a lot of love for bees (of course!) but there are so many other insects out there, all with their own roles.

Sunday is a good time to stop for a moment and smell the flowers. How about today you also take a closer look to see who's living on and around them? You may spot something you've never seen before and how amazing would that be?

Happy Sunday!

So...how can YOU support British Flowers?

Search for your local flower farmers! Head to the Flowers from the Farm website and put your postcode into the 'find flowers' search - et voilร ! It will show you where your nearest flower growers are.

Ask where your flowers are from, does your local shop/florist/supermarket stock British grown flowers?

Choose to use British grown flowers to support seasonal, sustainable and locally grown flowers, with no air miles, grown with nature.

As for me? If you'd like to buy flowers from Marsh Farm Flowers, please reach out, my contact details are in my Bio and very soon my website will be live (thank goodness for sisters who know how to code!).

We also have several events over the coming months, the most beautiful 'Pick and Paint' workshop with the incredibly talented and more Pick Your Own days - tickets for both can be found on Eventbrite!

Happy Sunday everyone. I'm off to drink wine as it's my wedding anniversary ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿท

Day 6 of British Flowers Week!

Happy summer solstice!

Today is all about promoting the other people who champion the use of British Flowers, and there are many!

Florists:-

I have been so lucky to meet these wonderful businesswomen since starting this journey. Carlie from I met in my very first year flower farming when she came to visit, Nat from came to my first pick your own and Lisa from bought flowers from Marsh Farm Flowers at the tail end of last year for the first time.

Each has their own amazing businesses, creating beautiful floral arrangements and being huge supporters of British Grown Flowers.

Growers - there are too many to pick! Which is what is so wonderful, you can find British flower growers all over the country if you look - you can use the Flowers from the Farm website to find your nearest grower.

- Carol created my own wedding flowers before I'd even considered growing cut flowers and her amazing flower farm is an inspiration to many! I also completed her business course that she ran with and and so will always be grateful to them!

These are all growers in the North West region that I've had the pleasure of meeting through Flowers From the Farm! There are many others so I apologise to those I have forgotten!

It's Day 4 of British Flowers Week!

Why should you choose British Flowers?

I don't think I can put it better than is stated on the Flowers from the Farm website -

๐ŸŒธ Tread lightly on the planet - here at Marsh Farm Flowers we grow outside or in a greenhouse/ low tunnel. We use the sun and the soil... No additional light or heat. We pick our flowers fresh from the field and they are in vases within the same day - no need for chillers or chemicals to extend vase life.
๐ŸŒธ We create a biodiverse environment for pollinators, we don't use artificial pesticides for the so called 'pests'. We find if nature is left to its own devices, it sorts itself out. So do we have slugs and snails? Yes... but they feed our local blackbird and thrush populations. Are all of our flowers perfect? No... But they can be left for birds and insects (like the wonky sunflower in the last picture!)
๐ŸŒธ To reduce flower miles and CO2 footprint - British flowers travel a fraction of the distance of imported flowers. You may be aware that the UK imports a lot of flowers from Holland but many are also air-freighted thousands of miles from South America, Africa and Asia.
๐ŸŒธ Character and charm - we grow flowers that are unusual, that you may not have even seen before. We use different blooms to create individual, characterful arrangements.
๐ŸŒธScent! This is a big one, British grown flowers smell amazing. Have you walked past a row of sweetpeas? The scent can knock your socks off!

It's Day 3 of British Flowers Week!

So, what do we grow?

All sorts! We grow different seasonal varieties, from the early shows of tulips and daffodils, through the bountiful summer that brings cornflowers, cosmos, snapdragons, sunflowers and so many other wonderful blooms, to the dahlias later in the season.

We still grow predominantly annual varieties (those that flower and set seed in one year) but are slowly building up our perennial stock (come back each year). We supplement these with Biennials (sown now to flower next year) and are also building up different foliage.

My favourite flower is the simple, but stunning, daffodil. One of the first signs at the start of the year that spring is on its way, it's cheerful yellow always lifts my mood and feeds my soul.

๐ŸŒธSo, now it's your turn.... What's your favourite flower? Pop it in the comments below and help celebrate the beauty of British blooms!๐ŸŒธ

It's Day 2 of British Flowers Week!

Today is all about where we grow, so I thought I would show the evolution of Marsh Farm Flowers - swipe for our journey!

๐Ÿ“ธ 1) The paddock before any beds were laid! We had a small holding growing up, and this paddock used to house geese, ducks, chickens, the occasional sheep and sometimes Rebel the pony when he pushed through from the main field ๐Ÿคฃ
๐Ÿ“ธ 2) The first bed! Dug over by hand to experiment between rotavated and no-dig beds
๐Ÿ“ธ 3) Second bed! First no-dig - Nels enjoying both equally
๐Ÿ“ธ 4&5) Year 1 of Marsh Farm Flowers, 7 beds, late winter/ early spring 2023.
๐Ÿ“ธ 6/7/8) 2024, Year 2, a few more beds put in, larger sweet pea trellis!
๐ŸŽฅ A video of the patch yesterday, lots of things budding up about to burst.

This all wouldn't be possible without the support of so many people and I'm incredibly grateful that I get to do this alongside my NHS work.

It's British Flowers Week!!

British flower growers from across the country are completing 7 days of content to raise the awareness of British grown cut flowers.

Today is about meeting the grower! So...

Hello! I'm Holly and like many flower farmers am not particularly comfortable in front of a camera!

I, along with my family, run Marsh Farm Flowers, an artisan flower farm in Crowton, Cheshire. Born from a need to support my mental health I started to grow cut flowers. I then found and with this amazing community have slowly grown the flower farm. We grow seasonal flowers, using environmentally friendly methods, no pesticides, fungicides or artificial fertilisers.

We offer gift bouquets, DIY wedding flowers, small wedding packages and have recently started to offer funeral/farewell flowers.

This venture has really helped me regain my balance, rediscover my love of the outdoors and nature and spend time with the people I love, all the while supporting the use of locally grown, British flowers.

I'm still pinching myself to check this was real. We all start somewhere and last year beautiful Gina asked me if I would do her wedding flowers- the brides bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets and buttonholes.

And when I say she was the perfect first bride I am not exaggerating, I was incredibly lucky that Gina wholeheartedly understood my ethos, the seasonality of British flowers and the free-rein it needed to create something for her and her partner Nathan's special day.

The outcome was a forest vibe, lots of enchanted greenery with pops of colour, all grown in Cheshire.

And how stunning does she look? That dress ๐Ÿ˜

These absolutely gorgeous photos of her and her bridesmaids are from her wedding photographer

Thank you to for the additional blooms!

Also need to shout out Northern Hands for their unbelievable naturally dyed silk ribbons which finished off the bouquets beautifully โค๏ธ

Nearing golden hour here at Marsh Farm Flowers and a moment of calm after a manic day of planting out.

I'm really proud of this, I'm really proud of what we've created.

Today I saw so many different species of wildlife on this little patch, blackbirds, wrens, thrushes, all different kinds of bees, mud daubers, butterflies, spiders, insects I can't name...!

And yes some of them aren't necessarily wanted due to phobias (I'm getting better spiders!) or because they'll eat my flowers.. BUT one of the things I was sure of when I started this was that I was going to work WITH nature, not against it.

No pesticides, no artificial fertilisers, no nasties!

It's so exciting to see buds on the plants we've nurtured and I can't wait for mid summer when this will just be packed with colourful blooms ready for picking, admiring and sniffing!

Happy weekend everyone!
