Rook Lane Chapel

Rook Lane Chapel Rook Lane is a space for the cross-pollination of art, architecture and education. Stunning Wedding

Rook Lane is a unique arts centre housed in a restored 18th century chapel. The chapel is home to NVB Architects as well as beautiful venue for hire, perfomance, exhibitions and weddings. Rook Lane works with a number of creative partners across art, music, education and design to deliver a diverse and dynamic year-long programme of events. History....

The original chapel was built in 1707 and se

rved the community of Frome until 1968 but then followed 25 years of dereliction. Through the 90s, the space was used by artists for informal workshops, performances and exhibitions but it wasn't until 2001 that NVB Architects moved in to renovate the chapel and build a contemporary annex at the rear. From 2003 - 2013, the arts progrmme at the Chapel was managed by Rook Lane Arts Trust whose remit is to use the chapel as a space to promote the arts and education in Frome. The Trust handed the running of the chapel over to NVB Architects in July 2013, but retain an active role in programming and fundraising for education projects based on site.

A touring exhibition 'Windrush the Journey: People and Place' is in residence at Rook Lane Chapel until Thursday 17th December, offering an opportunity to learn more about the lives and experiences of African and Caribbean people in the south west. The exhibition is a partnership between Somerset African Caribbean Network and GLADE Global Learning and Development Education Centre's 'A Place Called Home' project, funded by the National Lottery's Heritage Fund.

Mayor Andy Jones visited last week, meeting Lynn Cutler from GLADE, and said "There's a beautiful photo exhibition from Jim Grover, a social-documentary photographer with connections to Somerset. Jim’s particular passion is using images to tell stories…especially to celebrate daily life, people, local communities and traditions. The GLADE Centre has enriched the exhibition with artefacts from the era and with people happy to chat about their heritage, making for a fascinating visit."

Alongside the photo exhibition, there's a recreation of a Caribbean front room of the 1960s and personal testimonies from people who worked in the NHS, served in the armed forces and adjusted to a new life in the UK.

The exhibition is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. There are also art sessions, a talks exploring the history and music of Caribbean Carnival and a scripted reading of Andrea Levy's hit 2004 novel 'Small Island'.

All activities are free, some require booking in advance - find out more at https://bit.ly/windrush-exhibition-frome-2024
