We’re having the most beautiful warm and sunny spring weather here in the UK and it’s been glorious for well over a week now. This is most unusual! The weather has been better than our summers usually are. In between bridal orders, I’ve been working on a couple of new designs - this is the second and so, far, I’ve just made the headdress and some earrings. This one is gold with handmade cut brass stems, french beaded leaves and flowers. I’ve added 12 shades of pink and red Miyuki delica deed beads and it’s reminding me of cherry blossom - although I didn’t intend it to resemble blossoms. Maybe all of the blossom trees that are currently bursting into life have influenced me! I’ve used some antique seed beads and new Miyuki linen and flax coloured seed beads to make the leaves. If you’ve seen my stories over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been adding behind the scenes stages of this one coming to life. It’s going out on an adventure at the weekend and, you can see it in real life as I’ll be doing my only wedding fair of the spring season at on Sunday. More to come about that!

Today is the Spring Equinox, Ostara and it’s the most beautiful weather here in Frome. There’s not a cloud in the perfect blue skies. I’m not a Winter person. I miss the light and the colour and the life that Spring brings with it. Things have got rather busy over here since my last post and again, all good intentions of posting go out the window! A tiny collection is starting to take shape though and my tiny silvery antique glass beads are lending themselves so well to french beading and making tiny leaves. Here’s a little look at what I’ve been making. The crown needs ribboning (is that even a word?!) and there’s a pair of half made hoop earrings and a gold wire version of a side headdress (they’re having a bit of moment with my brides so I thought I’d make a little leaf version) to finish off. I’m thinking I might make a black leaf headdress too…… for more than weddings. I’m onto colour next. And rubies! Oh, and isn’t this music just so beautiful? I’ve always loved it but it seemed especially perfect for today.

It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to sit down and think about a new collection. It’s been a busy twelve months and I’ve completely let my social media posting go - I can’t say I’ve missed it. Instagram isn’t the joyful place it used to be but I have missed people and discovering creativity - although you have to really search for that now. I’m going to try to be a bit more present here though and perhaps go to back to the things I did enjoy about Instagram and that was sharing work in progress and creative experiments as well as discovering new artists. We’ll see how I get on! so back to the thoughts of a new collection…. I’ve always loved beadwork and taught myself the basics of French beading many years ago although in my usual fashion, I took the basics and then changed everything to make my own patterns and forms. Much more fun. I’ve got some beautiful antique glass seed beads that date back to the 20’s and 30’s so I’m going to combine these with my recycled metal leaves that I hand cut and make a very small collection based on the four seasons. I’ll add some of my favourite Miyuki delica seed beads for subtle hints of colour but the majority of the materials will be antique or recycled precious metals. I’m feeling quite excited about making some new pieces - it’s so easy to get caught up in orders, deadlines and work that time just vanishes and I forget how much I need the meditative process of making new designs and pushing myself to make better pieces and learn new skills. My inspiration for this collection is an antique seed pearl brooch that belonged to a relative and one of my favourite headdresses that I made about ten years ago now - it’s shown on the first two photos and features French beaded leaves, fresh water pearls and rubies. I’ve attached some photos of some of my beading practice leaves and foliage made with the antique beads and a photo of some of the hanks of beads - they really are beautiful and some are over a hundred years old. As always, I’m here to make exquisite headdresses and jewellery for those who seek beauty, originality and future heirlooms.

Wild Luxe - these incredibly beautiful images are by photographer, artist and Queen of the Wild . Helen’s first workshop took place in October last year in the Peak District and the photos are just so beautiful. Obviously, I’m in love with all things autumnal and I made Helen an epic crown to go with those epic landscapes. Here are just a few of Helen’s gorgeous photos but you can find more over on where there is a full feature. Here are the team of creatives who made this magic happen:

I’m not sure where the time has gone but it’s apparently the middle of May. I have got so many beautiful images to share from some gorgeous shoots that have happened over the last couple of months so to start with here are some photos (the first two) by the incredible and the product images are by of my Aurelian verdigris headpiece and matching earrings. This is one of my favourite hair accessories; it’s really versatile and a beautiful colour. Storme is one of the most talented hair stylists I’ve ever known and she always makes my hair accessories look amazing. I love the sleek, classic updo with a headpiece worn in at the side. Colour doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it can look really striking when the colours are carefully blended - the soft verdigris greens work so well with the pale golds.

COLOUR
I do love colour. It’s something that inspires a lot of my designs - even the ‘all ivory’ ones are a mix of about 15 different shades of white and ivory. I’ve recently been working on a couple of new statement crowns - both of them include some rather unexpected colour mixes. This one is possibly the largest crown I’ve made yet. I don’t think I intended it to be quite such a statement piece as it was initially supposed to be a pale peach and ivory version of my almond green and peach Camellia crown. But as I got going, the yellow happened and I really liked it with the peach, gold and ivory and it got bigger. There’s only a hint of yellow but it seems to bring it to life. I found some lovely hand dyed silk that I’ve had sitting in a box for years and it works really well. It’s a sort of intense gold with a hint of olive in it. I don’t remember where I got it from or who dyed it but if anyone recognises it, please let me know. I’ll add some photos to my stories of it on a mannequin as Instagram is doing some sort of strange cropping of photos on the grid posts. I can’t wait to see this crown on a person; it’s never quite right when I try them on in the studio as I’m so critical but I think it will look quite striking. There’s all sorts of things slowly happening behind the scenes - new collections take me a long time to make as I don’t get a lot of time to work on them but, new ideas often start out from a statement crown and then I make the more sensible sized pieces! Sometimes though, a statement crown is what’s needed.

Spring Equinox came a day early and happened yesterday so the days are finally getting longer and the light is coming back. It’s felt like a very long winter. I’ve been working on a few new bridal crown and headdress ideas and designs. I’m always making and in between bridal orders and jewellery making, I try to keep a few project pieces on the go. I carry them around with me in a box and take them home to work on. Some turn into collection designs, some become one of a kind pieces and others get re-worked. I usually start with making a crown or statement headpiece and, if that works, I’ll work on some smaller hair pins, combs and headpieces. This one has popped up in my stories at various stages but I think it’s now at the point where the beadwork is complete and it needs wrapping with ribbon. I really like the colours together - they’re a mix of greys, blue-greens, creams with a beautiful olive green crystal and warm gold. Sometimes, colours just work together and I love layering up the shades, tones and different materials - I think it brings a design to life. I don’t think these photos pick out the subtle differences in all the colours so, once it’s wrapped in bamboo silk, I’ll attempt some better photos. This one is quite a statement headdress but it’s surprisingly light. I always wrap the band of my headdresses and crowns in ribbon after all the beadwork is finished - I’m obsessed with the finish and quality of my pieces and wirework has to be perfect! I like all of the wirework around the band to be covered with ribbon not only for aesthetic purposes but because it’s more comfortable. Nobody wants ends of wire to catch in their hair! I’ve just got to decide what colour ribbon this one needs now.

Pale grey and gold crown
I made one of these crowns and it sold pretty much straight away so I made another one and it was featured in one of my favourite ever shoots (the one with three models wearing crowns a bit further down my posts). I’ve got enough flowers and leaves to make one more. I’ve used natural brass flowers and leaves and then I’ve enamelled them with a very pale grey enamel that, after firing, still shows shimmery gold underneath the grey and taupe tones. It’s a really lovely colour and effect combination. If you think you might like my last ever crown like this one, let me know!

Desdemona and Harlow
These two designs are very similar with combs and pins that can be mixed and matched.
Desdemona has rose like flowers with a statement asymmetrical crown (on the right of the first image), a symmetrical headband and combs in two different sizes all with those lovely white washed gold roses and leaves.

Harlow is changing as I’ve used up nearly all of my tulip bud flowers. I’ve got enough left to make one more crown and headband and then Harlow will be made with all leaves and no flowers at all. Harlow currently comes in a statement asymmetrical crown, a smaller asymmetrical headdress and a medium sized comb. The mini combs and pins work with either design.

Of course, you can also customise all of my designs so you can pretty much change any element of Desdemona and Harlow - Crowns can be symmetrical, headbands can be asymmetrical, combs bigger or smaller, the gold can be brighter or the brass can be whiter, the pearls and crystals can be a different colour, you can choose different flowers or have just leaves. You can take elements of both designs and have a pin in place headpiece made, a hair vine created or a set of statement hair pins, something that would be unique to you. That’s the joy of having something handmade for you.

I’m totally ready for spring now. To be fair, I’ve been ready for spring since November. I’m not the biggest fan of dark winter nights, grey skies and this lack of light. Several years ago, I went very suddenly blind in my left eye - my sight came back after about seven months but it’s never been quite the same so I now need to wear some pretty serious glasses to do my work. I’m always worried it will happen again and I might not be so lucky next time. I struggle with artificial light and have big daylight LED strips in the studio and big magnifying lamps to work under so that makes a huge difference but nothing is quite like natural daylight. Every winter, I’m counting down the minutes of extra light we gain after solstice. So whilst I patiently wait for the light to come back, I’ve got my daylight lamps and an optivisor (indispensable for jewellers even with good eyesight!). Here are some of my favourite softly coloured headdresses and headpieces in shades of faded pastels, blush pinks and pale golds with the most intricate bead and wire work and perfect for spring. The floral pieces are called Wild Eve named after a beautiful David Austin rose and the seed bead designs are called Willow.

Earrings (and headpieces!)
I don’t seem to post very much about my wedding jewellery which is a bit odd as I started out as a jeweller before I made headdresses.

Here are a few photos of some of the processes that go into making my hoop earrings. I make the hoops and ear wires using recycled sterling silver (1mm square profile for the hoops and 0.8mm round for the ear wires). I make my own ear wires; if I’m going to make an elaborate statement earring design, then I want it to have a handmade ear wire to go with it not something that’s been made in a factory. It also means that I can make them to size. Takes longer to do but makes them unique and I really enjoy the process of making jewellery findings by hand.

So, here are some of my dangly pearly earrings: I’ve made a new mini version of my popular Harlow pearl hoops and I’ve made a new design with little hand forged silver leaves to match my Silver Leaf headpieces. Both will be available soon. I’ve also photographed the Harlow dangle hoops next to the Calista hoops. My very biggest hoop is the large Calista which comes in at a statement 60mm diameter! The larger Harlow and Silver Leaves hoops are smaller and have a diameter of 45mm and hang at around 60-70mm in length. The little ones have 30mm hoops and the dangly Harlow are 45mm long.

As they are handmade, I can make them to be whatever size you’d like and hopefully, you would get plenty of wear out of these earrings after your wedding day.

Harlow and Desdemona Wedding Hair Combs and Hair Pins 🍂
These two designs are very similar and can be mixed and matched to create something really unique.

Harlow has changed a little this year as I have used up all of my tulip bud beads so, the larger of the Harlow combs is now made with all leaves and pearls.

I use a watered down enamel (also water based) to give the brass a light wash that softens the gold colour. It’s a really lovely effect and works so well with the gorgeous pearls.

The Desdemona combs feature whitened gold roses and they can be mixed with the Harlow pins and mini combs as the leaves and pearls are the same.

I do have my last ever Harlow comb with the tulip flower in my sample sale along with a matching mini Harlow comb - they’ve got 45% off so if you think you might like one of both of them DM me. The beadwork is perfect on both. You can see more of the combs and pins if you scroll through the photos.
