The Glasgow Art Club: Established 1867 and still going strong! There is something for everyone at the Glasgow Art Club.
(70)
In 1893 two adjacent town houses on Bath Street were transformed by architects Honeyman & Keppie, employing Charles Rennie Mackintosh, into the magnificent Clubhouse which stands today. Over the years the Club has evolved from a world solely occupied by the Arts into a diverse hang out for artists and non-artists alike - a melting pot of people of all ages, from all backgrounds, working in all pro
fessions. Fully licensed, with food served daily in the dining room, there is also a bustling diary of events with everything from live music and Burns Suppers to artist demonstrations and life classes.
The first 15 paintings to be auctioned include work by the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists.

Join us for The Blythswood Festival with lots of Talks, Walks, Demos & Afternoon Teas for everyone to enjoy - 23rd May to 8th June -
If, as Shakespeare says: ‘All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players’, then the streets of Glasgow are surely our stage; a time-shifting tableaux against which we, previous, and future generations, measure out our days and dramas.
NOT JUST a CRAFT OR PROFESSION:Bet Low and Scottish Colourist JD Fergusson
Talk by art curator Hildegarde Berwick
Thursday, 6th June 7.30pm
With a 50-year age gap between these two artists, what could they have in common?
With new illustration, Hildegarde Berwick throws light upon the connections.
Be surprised by the crossovers in their careers once Fergusson returned from France at the outbreak of the Second World War and chose to live in Glasgow.
Bet Low had an eventful 50+ year career in this city, including co-organising probably the first open-air painting exhibition on the railings of the Botanic Gardens, a short distance from where Fergusson lived.

THE LOST ART of HOLLYWOOD, TALK - HOSTED BY GARY FRY
Wednesday 5th June 15:30 - 16:30
Six original backdrops from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film archive have been rediscovered.
Lost pieces of art from the golden age of Hollywood have been rediscovered. Six original backdrops from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film archive have been donated to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland from the American Art Directors Guild archive.
These magnificent pieces were created by George Gibson, a Scot who trained in Glasgow before moving to Hollywood in the early 20th century, pioneering the new art form of painted backings for film. At MGM’s request he formed and headed for thirty years the first, and most important, in-house Art department of any major film company.
Join us for a special talk, hosted by Gary Fry, Head of Scenic Art, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, to find out more about how these – and other – iconic pieces of film history were created and used on the big screen, enjoyed by audiences worldwide.

The trio perform their own songs and arrangements of hand-picked covers.
Harmony is at the heart of Juniper Three, a vocal trio comprising Aimee Penman, Laura Hill and Outi Smith. The group writes and arranges their songs as a collective, creating a tapestry of genres in a lush, seamless interweaving of voices, and embracing the ethos of three solo singers coming together to share the lead.
As well as their own acclaimed material, the trio sings arrangements of hand-picked covers, in a similarly eclectic mix of styles, melody and jazz. Accompanied by piano; with some a ca****la.
Tickets £10 includes a small glass of wine or soft drink alternative.

Paid a visit to the The Glasgow Art Club & Gallery this week to see the 135th Paisley Art Institute exhibition (free, open Tuesday – Saturday 11am until 5pm until June 8, and well worth a visit), when I spotted this beauty - part of the club's permanent collection - by Robert Eadie, one of my favourite Glasgow artists.
Now, I've seen other Eadies of the trace horses on West Nile Street - used to double up with single horses drawing heavily laden carts coming from riverside warehouses and workshops, to make their way up the incline to the old Buchanan Street railway goods station - but I'd never seen this one.
Painted circa 1944, the two blokes on the left were Eadie's Art Club cronies, and two of the city's movers and shakers. The figures are, on the far left, Dr O.H. Mavor, better known as writer and playwright James Bridie, the man who created the Citizens' Theatre, and Dr Tom Honeyman, the director of Kelvingrove Art Gallery, and the man who bought Dali's 'Christ of St John of the Cross' for the city.
As to who the scarlet woman is, we'll never know...
Talk by Hildegarde Berwick on Bet Low's Centenary.
Friday 24th May at 2 pm.
In this centenary year of the birth of Glasgow based artist Bet Low, Hildegarde describes the art and life of this important figurative and landscape painter.
The artist is best known for her tranquil views of Orkney and other west coast locations in Scotland. In 1963 she co-founded a pioneering art gallery in Sauchiehall Street to show the work of young, ambitious artists.
Her views of Glasgow dating to the late 1940s and 1950s, have since become important documents of now lost areas of the city. In 1999, Bet was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Glasgow University.
