Immerse yourself in a black and white dreamscape. Alasdair Dimmick's series of double exposure photographic works 'Lagoon' presents the outcome of stitching two scenes together. Together they suggest that the places and people we see in dreams are only the product of real experiences, woven together by our minds to design a new environment.

'Lagoon' - Alasdair Dimmick is open until 25 February in the South Block gallery, all info on the Wasps website: https://www.waspsstudios.org.uk/events/alasdair-dimmick-lagoon/

Join us this Thursday 16 December, 5-8pm for the opening of the next exhibition at South Block - Bones from Harriet Selka

More info ⬇

Opening this Thursday 16 December, 5-8pm at South Block: 'Bones' from Harriet Selka. An autobiographical collection of works by an artist who beat cancer as a child, stripping back the flesh of outside perception.

Bones is based on a collection of recently re-discovered newspaper cuttings, photographs and memories from 1995, when Harriet was front page news worldwide for breakthrough fertility preservation treatment in an infant cancer patient. Viewing these old records through the lens of today, Harriet has amalgamated the hope and celebration of the time with the pain and uncertainty of struggles that all young adults face. Many of these images have triggered memories of experiences and stories of the time in the artist’s mind.

Join us for the opening this Thursday. Bones then continues until 8 Feb, Mon - Fri, 9-5 (closed 24 Dec - 5 Jan)

"I sometimes feel I am on a Spacewalk observing life on earth from another planet in both wonder and disbelief. I started to think like an astronaut and change the way I view life. The visual images of the unspoken words transformed into art." - Sharon McKay

Sharon McKay's solo exhibition 'PERVASIVE ENIGMAS' is now open at South Block. McKay is a storyteller through her oil paintings, which depict the surrealism of an autobiographical life or travel, people and conversations. 'PERVASIVE ENIGMAS' is open until 15 October, Mon-Fri 9-5.

It's your last chance to see 'STOP.START.' from Sarah Kudirka and Rowena Comrie, closing today at South Block.

Both working from Wasps Artists' Studios, the painters hold synergies in their approach to bold colour and abstraction, though with markedly different techniques.

Comrie’s paintings are about the spontaneous expression of feelings tempered by the objective assessment of chance occurrences, identified in the Surrealist canon as ‘Objective Chance’. She captures in a gesture meaning born from a provocative tension balanced by colour and form.

Kudirka’s work concerns the shapes and edges of stuff all around us from cities, buildings, and furniture to objects. Her work is distinctively low-tech – characterised by obliterated, incised, scratched, scraped, layered paint. She pulls things apart and builds them back up again iteratively.

Open now in the South Block gallery: Wasps Artists' Studios presents Rowena Comrie and Sarah Kudirka - 'STOP.START.' Here are artists Sarah and Rowena post install!

'STOP.START' is open until 4 Sep, Mon-Fri 9-5. Both artists create bold and colourful paintings, though made in markedly different ways. While neither is solely process-driven, elements of stop.start play a part in the methodology of both. Seen together here for the first time their work may seem to ask: does it change the destination if you have a plan, or not, for getting there?

Open now at South Block: 'Futures One' from Nick Domminney, the inaugural solo show of the Glasgow based Architect!

Wasps Artists' Studios presents a series of original watercolours with prints. 'Futures One' is “a study in horizontal lines”, derived from the artist’s childhood preoccupation with the vast horizon and constantly shifting skies of Fifeness, the ever-changing line and its articulation.

Open Mon-Fri, 9-5. All info: https://www.waspsstudios.org.uk/latest/events/nick-domminney-futures-one/

Great to see susan pui san lok - seven x seven, which Wasps Artists' Studios are currently hosting here at South Block and over the road at The Briggait in ArtReview's Glasgow International review 🌟

"The overlooked, the forgotten, are the subject of susan pui san lok’s powerful exhibition seven x seven. A long list of surnames on wallpaper – Ascendants Descendant/Descendants Ascendant (2021) – testifies to brutal misogyny and the large number of women accused of witchcraft in Scotland between 1563 and 1736. A video, 99 (2021), features embroidery hoops with the names and villages of those women persecuted in Essex around the same time."

It's the final weekend to see the installations, as Glasgow International closes this Sunday 27 June - don't miss it!

Glasgow International Festival opens this Friday! In South Block's first physical exhibition of 2021, Wasps will be hosting 'seven x seven' from susan pui san lok, curated by Mother Tongue, at South Block and The Briggait Project Spaces.

Inspired by local stories and sites including Pollok House and the Mugdock Park Drowning Ponds, seven x seven seeks to connect narratives of persecution and resistance. This marks the Scottish exhibition debut of London-based artist susan pui san lok, bringing together new commissions and existing work across installation, sound, film and text.

South Block will be open to the public daily 10-5, whereas the Briggait work is designed to be viewed from the street. Please note that we have limited capacity entry to South Block. We will not be operating an advance ticketing system, but ask audience members to safely queue outside the venue if we are at capacity upon arrival.

Join us on 17 June 5-6pm for an online artist talk and the launch of the artist multiple 'seven x seven,' in collaboration with The Courtauld and The Glasgow School of Art, online booking essential

On 20 June, tune into GI Radio to hear the artist's related soundwork, Seven Sisters (2019), audio essays by Mother Tongue and Alexandra Kokoli, and the folksongs that inspired the artist's sound installations, Cruel Mothers/Gross Lovers (2019) and Cruel Mothers/Fine Flowers (2021).

Beautiful installation shots of 'QUARRY' by Kirsty Palmer, currently showing in our gallery windows. Rooted in interaction with materials, place and process, Kirsty’s practice addresses ideas surrounding landscape, archaeology and materiality. QUARRY brings together a series of recent work; these objects speak of working processes and materials inherent to both the studio and land-based environments.

'QUARRY' is the final exhibition in the Wasps Artists' Studios Time Being Programme, available to view, 24 hours a day, from street-side through the gallery windows. Our in person exhibition programme will be opening soon, so keep your 👀 peeled. While we wait to allow visitors into our gallery spaces, the Time Being programme allows us to showcase some of our tenants' and waiting list artist's incredible work.

Also on show as part of our Time Being Programme: 'Two Step/Selvedge to Selvedge' from Beth Shapeero and Fraser Taylor, over the road from South Block at the Briggait. With lots of our neighbouring gallery friends now open, including Glasgow Print Studio, Street Level Photoworks, The Modern Institute, and Lunchtime Gallery, make a Glasgow gallery weekend of it!
