This year's Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival starts tomorrow and runs through to next Sunday 19th September. Our digital trail which Hoskins Architects have developed with a little help from the Trust goes live as part of the festival tomorrow and maps out a selection of repurposed buildings which sit between the Halls' original site on Queen Street and it's current position next to Queen's Park.

The digital tour has been created in Guidigo - to access it please head to this link https://glasgowdoorsopendays.org.uk/digital-trails/. You will find the Langside Halls on the list and the link to the trail will go live tomorrow. Each stop has a collection of images and a building description, which highlights some of the building features, and where possible mentions some interesting historical facts.

There are 3 illustrations included in the tour including this smasher of the Halls, which have been kindly created by Design Inline artist Emma Smith. Emma started drawing her designs in November 2020 at the height of lockdown boredom, needing something to do that felt more productive than watching more TV! She discovered how much she enjoyed exploring the intricate details of Glasgow’s eclectic architecture. With her digital drawing tablet, Emma can spend hours sketching out the fine detail of stonework or ornate windows, and she finds a sense of therapeutic relief in watching her designs become more and more detailed. If you are interested in seeing more of Emma's work or buying any of her prints, head to her Etsy site: https://www.etsy.com/shop/designinline/

The Trust would like to say a massive thank you to Hoskins Architects for all their hard work putting together the tour and to Emma for her illustrations! We hope everyone enjoys the tour and would love to hear about your experience in the comments🙂

We have an exciting opportunity - we are looking to expand our Board of Trustees with the addition of a youth trustee! If you are aged between 18-25 this could be for you. Perhaps you are a marketing or communication studies student who has skills in managing social media accounts and websites? It is an exciting time to join the board as a Feasibility Study has just been completed by Hoskins and we will be exploring possibilities to gain capital funding in order to fully refurbish the Halls in the coming years.

If you are passionate about the Langside Halls and would like to join the Trust who are working closely with the local community to ensure that the proposals for the building's future continue to serve their needs, whilst making improvements that will allow for a more sustainable and inclusive facility, then please drop us an email here: [email protected]. Closing date 30-09-21.

Stop 5 on our upcoming digital trail which we have been designing together with Hoskins Architects and which will be launched as part of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival is the former British Linen Company Bank building, designed in 1897 by architect James Salmon Jr, and built 3 years later in 1900. Initially the British Linen Company Bank’s aims were to promote the linen manufacturing industry, then from the 1760’s it moved towards banking and note-making. In 1906 the company changed its name to the British Linen Bank. This building is one of few to survive the Gorbals clearances of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The four storey building is the last remaining tenement to have survived.
In the 1990’s the building was occupied by Bobby Clarke’s Funeral Parlour and it became an A-listed building.

The Southside Housing Association took over the building from Glasgow City Council and secured a funding package, and developed design plans for renovation in 2016, where it now sits as residential flats. We are delighted to see that the building has been restored to its former glory, does anyone have any memories or stories of the building from the past?

ANNOUNCEMENT!
The Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival programme is now live on the Doors Open Day website and you can see the trail we have been busy creating together with Hoskins Architects here: https://glasgowdoorsopendays.org.uk/digital-trails/.

The trail is entitled 'Langside Halls: From Queen Street to Queen's Park. A Journey From Commerce to Community' and will be available during the festival between 13th-19th September.

The tour guides you on a journey from the Halls’ original site on Queen Street in the city centre to their current location. Along the way is a series of stops, that demonstrate how buildings have been adapted over the years to suit the changing needs of the communities around them.

We are delighted to announce that we are teaming up with Hoskins Architects to host an online guided tour for Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival in September. As you may or may not know, the Halls were moved stone by stone at the start of the 20th century to their current position on Langside Avenue, so we are planning a tour which commences at their original spot on Queen Street in the city centre. We are in the early stages of planning at the moment, but can reveal the second stop on the tour will be the original Glasgow Glasgow Subway ticket office building, located in St Enoch Square and designed by James Miller in 1896. The building which was constructed in a Flemish Renaissance style has now been repurposed to a coffee shop Cafe Nero.

A big thank you to Barry the Cat and Sapien82 for giving The Bothy a facelift a few weeks ago as part of the Shawlands Art Trail coordinated by Bid Manager Lisa McLaughlin and Gaz Mac from SWG3's Yardworks project.

The trail brings together graffiti artists, illustrators, ceramicists, sculptors and designers from around the local area to add art and colour to the blank spaces of Shawlands over three phases. Projects range from small street level pieces up to large gable ends, all done with cooperation from building owners, tenants, Glasgow City Council as well as the artists that will be assigned each space.

The single storey ‘Bothy’ adjacent to Langside Halls presents opportunities for an outpost for the Halls with the potential to create a connection in the landscape between the two buildings. Hoskins Architects have included the building in the recent Feasibility Study, and it is to be explored in more detail during the future stages of the project.

Thank you again to everyone involved, the mural has certainly provided a big splash of colour to an otherwise rundown and derelict building!

Thank you to Murry Max for this great shot of the Halls with the scaffolding which currently surrounds them. The Halls are undergoing some essential maintenance on the roof (unfortunately it’s a bit too early to be starting the proposed renovations!) We’d like to thank Glasgow City Council for arranging and funding these repairs as holes in the roof have lead to some water damage to the beautiful interiors.
Just a wee reminder that Glasgow City Council own the building and Glasgow Life operate it.

CLOSES TODAY!
Our friends at Pollokshields Community Council are seeking to appoint an artist to engage with the local community,
design, project manage and deliver a temporary installation to improve the hoarding boards that surround the derelict space.
Making the building safe for residents is a long process involving various parties. In the meantime we want to lift the spirits of affected residents and bring the community together by creating a new focal point for the Cross.

Head to the link below for further details.

This impression of the main entrance and main hall shows a welcoming entrance fit for a public building of this scale, allowing space for people to meet and socialise and the potential for a pop-up cafe or bar.

Did you know that the capacity of the main hall is 480 meaning that our consortium partner The Glad Cafe could host live music events here? If this interests you, please tell us about it in our community engagement questionnaire located on our website: https://langsidehalls.com
