Roland Chin, who is the recipient of a Step into the Arts grant by Youth Scotland, will be exhibiting his photography and digital artwork at Bee's Knees Café in Glasgow from 2nd to 30th September.
Roland believes that his mother’s empathy, activism, and willingness to make a difference run deep within him. As a 15-year-old teenager who is oversized and biracial, as well as sensitive, he has had to deal with a lot of harassment and bullying. This tough experience gave him the incredible strength and courage to stand up for other vulnerable young people and advocate for them. He was nominated as anti-bullying president at his high school and wants to extend his message of positivity and kindness through art to the general public in Glasgow.
This project is not about teaching youths how to accept and love themselves; it is about improving their mental health and emotional well-being.
A few words from Roland:
“Happiness, self-fulfillment, and following the dreams of a young man are what I love to capture and immortalize in my photographs. My goal is to give them the feeling that they are understood and listened to whenever possible, for example by inviting them for a walk and casual conversation. Before I start photographing, I encourage them to discuss, only when my guests become more relaxed do I take pictures of them. I try to capture the most beautiful spark of emotion that my "models" will remember forever. After slightly editing their photos, I am able to show the world how wonderful and beautiful they are by just being themselves. I want to show them that no amount of make-up, fancy flashes, or filters can reveal the true beauty that lies dormant in each of us, which is integrally connected with our being. So far, I've worked with a few teenagers and slightly more "mature" teenagers, and five younger children of my mother's friends. Each person during the session gained joy and self-confidence, in each person I was able to see and capture this spark of light appearing in their eyes, a light-filled with gentleness, love, and self-confidence that they say they have not often experienced before."

Roland says: “I named this exhibition The Spark of Soul as I aim to capture the most beautiful spark of emotions that my audience can remember forever… Everybody I photographed felt a bright light shining in their eyes, a light-filled with self-compassion, love, and confidence they had never experienced before.”
Their authentic selves are beautiful, as is, in these natural photoshoots.

Welcome to Bee’s Knees Cafe!

Imagine yourself sipping a wonderful coffee immersed in another spacetime - between now and the future. You can make that very image your reality just by visiting Bee's Knees Cafe. Inviting... Cosy... Filled with fine furniture, captivating china and records bursting with soul; stories all around you... Bees Knees is a refuge, a place that allows me (and you!) to feel safe, surrounded by a delightful community. We are born needing a sense of others. So in Bees Knees, among the warm, comforting scents of great coffee and cakes, the noises of people, their occasional glances and the chatter, you could give your mind and soul a little of what it craves; being here and now, in peace. Allow yourself to press pause on the world surrounding you if even for a moment, to breathe again. Bee's Knees pays homage to the city’s ethnically diverse culture, to the fascinating and colourful Govanhill and Strathbungo, the cafe functions as a venue for unique private celebrations and memorable events to accommodate people who love people. Come coorie in, delight the palate, make beautiful connections, contemplate life... Come, make yourself comfortable. And remember: You're the bee's knees!
