D:Ream invited a very special guest for the last song of a memorable set. Things could only get better, as Professor Brian Cox took to the stage. One of those unforgettable "were you there?" Glastonbury moments.

With decades of house music knowledge and passion hailing from 90ā€™s sweaty raves and vinyl days, Sammy Dean brings you an eclectic mix of house, classics, disco, and 80ā€™s edits. ā€œIf I like it, I play itā€.

Winner of 2023ā€™s ā€˜Slip back in timeā€™ Mix Factor competition, judged by legends Slipmatt, Rob Tissera and Ratpack, Sammy played a winnerā€™s set at iconic Ibiza club Es Paradis. They said ā€œSammy is a very talented, passionate DJ with a truly special sparkleā€

Smashing festival sets at Glastonbury, Beatherder and Carfest have been highlights, as well as playing at Clockwork Orange at Fabric London and alongside Denise Van Outen and Jemma Bolt as part of their Discoliscious event. Sammy has given up her 9-5 to pursue her DJ career and is hoping to inspire others that it is never too late to follow your dreams.

The ā€˜pocket rocketā€™ as she has been nicknamed, is certainly making for take-off.

Catch Sammy at the Spike on Thursday and Saturday!

Funktion-One, led by founder Tony Andrews, will work in collaboration with rental partner Audio Plus to once again deliver the Glade Stage sound this year.

Tony's first involvement in Glastonbury goes back to the very beginning. He was a key member of the sound crew at the 1971 Glastonbury Fayre (photo 1) widely regarded as the first edition of the Glastonbury Festival.

(Photo 2: Tony with Phil, Bill Harkin - designer of the Pyramid Stage, and Harry Williamson)

Tony later persuaded Michael Eavis to bring back the festival in 1979 and make it an annual event. He led the build of the first permanent Pyramid Stage (designed by Bill Harkin) in 1981 (photo 3) and throughout the 1980s and 1990s his loudspeaker systems were the sound of Glastonburyā€™s main stage (photo 4).

Towards the second half of the 1980s, a new youth movement was born. Tony's sound systems were at the forefront of this musical evolution and the emerging dance music scene. When he visited Michael Eavis in 1992, he was the founder of a newly formed company called Funktion-One. His mission was to persuade Michael that this underground scene, now rising into the mainstream, needed its own space at the festival for an electronic music party.

Michael was initially concerned that this would be a rave and, therefore, a bridge too far. However, he relented, setting aside an area for Tony's idea, while being careful not to make the area part of the official festival due to the moral panic (photo 5) which seemed to be surrounding the emergence of the electronic music movement at that time.

The Experimental Soundfield (photo 6 and 7) was a great success. The Saturday night attracted around 8,000 people, who danced inside a four-point Funktion-One soundfield. The soundtrack, played from front-of-house, was a collaboration between a collection of then unknown DJs and musicians, including Darren Emmerson and Underworld. The Experimental Soundfield was the precursor to the Glastonbury Dance Tent and the current Dance Village.

Over the last 30 years, the relationship between The Glade team and Funktion-One has flourished. In 2011, they collaborated on the Spirit of '71 stage and brought back the Experimental Soundfield in 2016 (photo 8 ). In recent years, the Glade Stage (photo 9 and 10) has been firmly established as the place to experience Funktion-One's latest innovations and is considered by many as the best sound at the festival.
