Our Story

The New Inn was built in 1450 by John Twyning, a monk, as a hostelry for the former Benedictine Abbey of St Peters. The inn replaced an older inn that was one of the main lodgings for pilgrims visiting the Abbey that is now Gloucester Cathedral.

In 1553 King Edward VI died and was Lady Jane Grey was pronounced Queen of England from the first floor gallery of the hotel by the Abbot of Gloucester.

It is also rumoured that Shakespeare performed a number of plays in the courtyard with his company β€œThe Lord Chamberlains men as it is known that the company did visit and perform in Gloucester and Inns were often used for theatrical performances.

Today the Inn has 34 ensuite rooms, including The Oak Suite and The Lady Jane Grey Suite, two four poster rooms, as well as a bar showing sport, live music on Fridays and karaoke on a Saturday. There is a restaurant which opens daily from 12pm to 9pm with a carvery on Saturday and Sunday and freshly made specials daily, along with a comprehensive menu. The Inn also boasts a coffee shop, open daily from 9am, serving teas, coffees, cakes and breakfasts and on the first floor is the impressive Regency Suite, used for functions.
