Another fascinating historical fact about Gretna Green is that it became a popular destination for elopements due to the Marriage Act of 1754 in England. This act required couples under the age of 21 to have parental consent to marry. Young couples who were eager to wed without consent would flee to Gretna Green, where Scottish marriage laws allowed them to marry without parental approval. This led to Gretna Green becoming synonymous with clandestine weddings and romantic elopements throughout history.

We're sparking up for OVO's EV Rally⚡🌍

OVO, a company committed to supporting climate action and education in schools across the UK, at Gretna Green, today as part of the A-to-Z EV Rally.

With 24 teams and 60 electric vehicles, this five-day event aims to demonstrate the practicality of travelling across the country using existing charging infrastructure and the capabilities of electric vehicles in everyday journeys.🚗

We are proud to support this initiative with our own electric car charging points here at our visitor attraction and in our hotels, ensuring visitors can conveniently charge their vehicles. Good luck to the team with the rest of the rally 🏁

☺️Today, Springfield Primary School visited us on their last day of the term.
They got to explore our Blacksmiths Shop Experience and even participated in a re-enactment, which was so exciting!
They also enjoyed delicious cookies and refreshing juice. After that, our piper Alan piped them out.

In Erin's own words, the artwork was: "To celebrate same-sex marriage and diversity. I added the colours of the gay pride flag to represent men and women equally... to evoke the 'spirit of beautiful rebellion' at Gretna Green."
