Creating celebrations with more intention is a beautiful and meaningful experience.

I recently attended a 2nd birthday party where we participated in a birthday walk. A sun was placed in the middle with pictures from each year (or in this case, month). Usually the birthday person will hold a globe and walk around the sun once for each year. Stories and memories of the child was shared and then we sang Happy Birthday. It was a beautiful and meaningful way to celebrate.

What birthday traditions or rituals do you have?

🥳💡Top Tip Tuesday💡🥳

Happy Halloween everyone! Hope you have a spooktacular day but let’s not end the day with the scary thought of all the pumpkins that are just thrown away! Make them into something yummy instead!

What are your favourite recipes for leftover pumpkin? We love to make soup and top the soup with roasted pumpkin seeds.

Small bits of foil just gets lost on the belts at the recycling centre. Save them up and then squish them together in a ball. I normally wrap a bigger bit of foil around it all to keep it together, then put in your recycling bin! We have a foil jar to keep all those little bits in!

So this Halloween, keep all those foil wrappers and help ensure they are recycled!

🥳💡Top Tip Tuesday 💡🥳

Halloween is just a week away! But here are some scary facts!

- 7 million costumes binned each year in the UK
- 300 million pounds spent on Halloween
- 18 000 tonnes of pumpkin are thrown away each year
- Waste produced equivalent to 83 million plastic bottles

Now that is terrifying!! Let’s leave the kids to the spooky bit and think about ways we can reduce the impact on the planet this Halloween:

- Make your own costumes / swap with friends or buy second hand
- Visit your local sweet shop and buy loose sweets! Sweet Memories of Hadleigh always have a great selection. Or buy in bulk and separate into paper bags rather than lots of individual sweets wrapped in single use plastic
- Consider having vegan sweet options for any vegetarian or vegan children
- Make use of your pumpkin and turn it into something yummy like soup or pie
- Use reusable tableware for your Halloween party
- Store away any decorations for reuse next year

TODAY a new ban on single-use plastic comes into force in England. It includes…

🚫 Single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays
🚫 Single-use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks
🚫 Plastic balloon sticks
🚫 Polystyrene cups and containers

This is similar to bans already in place in Scotland, the EU and many other countries and states around the world.

The positive impacts of similar bans have been seen quickly (after the plastic-stemmed cotton bud ban, the numbers found on UK beaches dropped by more than half) so this ban is to be celebrated. However I can’t help feeling that we aren’t taking full advantage of this opportunity to make change.

The ban doesn’t include plastic cups or single-use items made from mixed materials, like paper plates. There are also some exceptions such as plastic trays or bowls used in pre-packaged food, which will undoubtedly lead to confusion.

A BBC report on Friday highlighted that many businesses are unaware of the new ban and wholesalers still have stock of items which are now banned.

And I fear that simply banning plastic isn’t enough to cause the shift we need away from our dependency on single-use.

Single-use plastic-free alternatives cost businesses more money and likely have a higher carbon footprint (it takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag than a plastic one). It also doesn’t do anything to tackle our waste crisis.

We need to support more businesses to switch to reusables. Via Upstream, I’ve seen the results of some great pilots in the US to support businesses and universities to make this change. We need to be doing more of this.

💡🥳TOP TIP TUESDAY🥳💡

Got leftover stale sandwiches that no one wants to eat? Turn them into toasties! I just melt some butter in a pan and fry them off. They go down a treat and prevents food wastage.

💡🥳TOP TIP TUESDAY🥳💡

Last of our ballon tip series!

Balloon releases pose an incredibly significant risk to the environment and wildlife. There are so many other ways you can commemorate an event. Here are some ideas:

🌳Plant a tree
🌻Plant sunflowers
🌸Sprinke wildflower seeds
🪁Fly kites
⭕️Sit in circle together and share memories or things you love about that person/event

Bonus tip! 💡Have a read of this brilliant book 'Marli's tangled tale' by E.Jackson and L.Callwood to learn more about the risk of ballon releases
