Last month, 365Radio's Ben Felton sent the countdown numbers off on a steamer as he ended the Album Countdown show, transforming it to The Ben Felton Album Emporium. The numbers have reached the shores of the United States and have sent the following letter back to Ben...
My Dearest Ben,
It is me, number four from the Countdown Numbers. I have been voted by the rest of the numbers to write to you. (Actually, I volunteered because I have always been secretly in love with you.)
We hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It feels as if an eternity has passed since I last saw your face and felt the warmth of your embrace. That fond farewell as we sailed from the grey shores of the UK to lands unknown. The distance between us, though vast, cannot diminish the depth of our love for you. Every day here in America only makes us long for you even more.
Life in this new land is not what we had hoped it would be. We find ourselves missing the simple, familiar comforts of home. The people here are friendly enough, but their ways are so different from ours. There is a lack of the subtle, polite manners we hold dear back in the UK. Conversations often feel abrupt, and I miss the gentle, respectful tones we use when we speak.
And they murder our language. Water is βwadderβ. Pavements are βsidewalksβ. I could ramble on.
The food here is another challenge. I yearn for a proper English breakfast and the hearty, comforting meals we used to share. The cuisine here seems overly sweet or excessively rich, lacking the delicate balance of flavours we grew up with. Oh, what we would give for a slice of homemade pork pies, or a simple cup of tea made just the way you do!
The weather, too, has been a constant reminder of how far we are from home. The summers are unbearably hot, and the winters are harsher than I expected. We miss the mild, temperate climate of the UK, where even a rainy day felt cozy and familiar.
Perhaps what we miss most is the sense of history and tradition that permeates every corner of our homeland. Here, everything feels new and transient, as if the past holds little significance. We long for the cobbled streets, the old stone buildings, and the sense of belonging that comes from being surrounded by centuries of our shared heritage.
Despite all these hardships, our love for you remains our guiding light. Thoughts of you bring us comfort and strength. We often imagine us together, walking through the lush green fields of our countryside, hand in hand in hand, or sitting by the fire, talking about everything and nothing. These dreams keep us going and give me hope that one day we will be reunited.
Please know that you are always in our hearts and on my mind. We count the days until we can return to you and the life we built together. Until then, I will hold on to the love we share and the promise of better days ahead.
Yours always and forever,
Number Four and the rest of us countdown numbers.
