Horsham 4XV 15-20 H&B 2XV
Saturday saw H&B’s 2XV put their disjointed morning and long journey behind them and take on Horsham 4’s. Despite lots of players starting in unfamiliar positions, the team kept a strong Horsham side at bay for the first part of the game, before a missed tackle let the home side through to score after 12 mins of pressure.
A quick positive chat under the posts from Captain Berwick Smith reminded H&B that on the whole it was a good start and to keep at it! The positive affirmations worked, and some great teamwork gave youngster George Feeley the half yard of space he needed to create havoc with the opposition. In he went, to make the score 5-5.
Following more great team play and phases of pressure, the ball found Kaleb, Hasting’s new hot stepping front row. He stepped then steam rolled his way through for his debut senior try. 5-10.
Into the second quarter, injuries saw the already makeshift pack shuffled again with Louie McIndoe coming in off the wing to Flank. Meanwhile Chris ‘Stoney’ Pillow (the oldest man in the team) moved to second row for a well-deserved rest.
The second half started poorly, with and equaliser for Horsham. 10-10. The home side were running with purpose and making good ground. The skipper again rallied his troops under the posts – although things got worse when he took his own tackle advice a bit too literally, and having sprinted a full 30 metres, absolutely annihilated the opposing full back. Unfortunately, despite his textbook technique, he was rewarded with 10 minutes rest for making contact a tad above the sternum.
With the extra man, Horsham began to target Hastings’ inexperienced wing, scoring again and pushing for more. Despite this pressure, great tackling and intelligent kicking not only kept them at bay, but a quick break by Harry Stanley set Ashton Di Pola away for a try against the run of play, maintaining the score at 15-15.
Fresh from his 10 minute Siesta and with oxygen levels restored, the Skipper came back on and made an instant impact (under clear instruction from vice-captain for the day Pillow).
Spurred on, Stoney took a quick penalty when Horsham were expecting a kick to touch, making good ground and recycling the ball well. H&B were awarded another penalty just outside the 22. Again, the master tactician Pillow suggested a 5 man line-out catch and drive, working splendidly and allowing the experienced Smith going over for the lead, 15-20.
With nothing to lose in the last 10 minutes, Horsham threw everything at a resolute H&B, who man for man tackled ferociously as the opposition set up camp in the blue 22. The last play of the game was Horsham being held up over the line as Smith made amends for his earlier indiscretion.
There were many good performances this weekend. The scrum always went forward despite being several stone lighter than the opposition. Kaleb saw off his opposite number despite having no one pushing behind him, and made numerous runs and tackles. Ho**er Noah Linfield controlled the line out and worked tirelessly in the loose, whilst prop Jack Hardy carried well and used his experience to be in the right place at the right time in defence.
Ollie Westgate ran the line out (nicked a few of theirs too!) and commanded respect with and without the ball in open play, making metres or bringing down opposition runners.
Louie came in off the wing to flank for the first time and was like a Jack Russel on heat, constantly tackling and getting in the opposition’s way.
Hasting’s Northern Sebastian Chabal did what he does best, ran straight and true and dared people to run through his channel – very few did!
Ashton at 9 showed everyone how to counter ruck, was alert all day made several breaks which awarded him the try he deserved. Harry Stanley marshalled the defence well, used the ball wisely and got involved in many a ruck. Matt Thompson in off the wing found his feet at centre and was a threat with the ball and stout in defence.
George had a great game and must have been a close candidate for MotM, carrying superbly and continually making ground. The young gun got the first try and on another day could have had 3. He also tackled superbly, scything down anyone that was foolish enough to get close to him.
Big Willie Hirst made ground every time he got the ball and was resolute in defence. Luke Maddox, back in his familiar role of full back, made good ground and the right decisions every time with his free flowing attacking style. Although he has had better days with the boot.
Of the redheads, Ginger Dave made a good start before an unfortunate fall with his leg trapped saw him go off early to cheer us on from the sidelines. Meanwhile the skipper needs to up his fitness and maybe (judging by his ribs) tweak his tackle technique – but what a hit that was!
MotM Chris Pillow was a constant thorn in the opposition’s side, making countless tackles and using every bit of his experience to know when to and when not to get involved. He was a menace throughout and was described by the opposition as a ‘flipping nuisance’. He galvanised the pack superbly throughout the game, and the team as a whole when down to 14 men. He could also have had 3 tries this week, had he not had buttery toast as his pre match meal…
