Flowertime and The Big Pink Tree

Flowertime and The Big Pink Tree Flowertime Florist and wesendflowers.co.uk Flowertime Florist was established on the 18th September, 1989.

The business was founded by Mark Nicholas and as the business has expanded and grown Mark’s wife Rebecca, also a qualified florist, has joined the team making Flowertime a successful locally run family business. Since Flowertime was established Mark has become the highest qualified florist in the Cornwall area, gaining the National Diploma of the Society of Floristry (NDSF) and the American Instit

ute of Floral Designer’s (AIFD) qualifications. Mark has demonstrated and judged nationally and has been invited many times to exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show, where Flowertime Florist has gained numerous medals including gold. Flowertime began by selling just flowers and plants, but over the years has expanded its range of products to include greetings cards, jewellery, handmade chocolates & soaps, candles, vases and glassware. Flowertime is the official stockists of Carrie Elspeth Jewellery, LSA Glassware, Celtic Herbal Company, Wendy Jones Blackett, Belly Button Designs, Umbra, Gisela Graham, Lime, Quire, Button Love, Rachel Ellen Designs, Bitter & Twisted, Culture Mix, David Chapman Photography and Kernow Chocolate, to name a few. Flowertime provides flowers for all occasions, specialising in gift, funeral and wedding flowers. Flowertime Florist is able to deliver flowers locally, nationally and internationally through a network of associated florists around the World. Why I became a florist?

At school my first choice of career was horticulture, I was inspired when I met the Late Percy Thrower at his nursery back in the early 80s and he gave me a small Hoya plant (they were rare back then).

However, as a life-long sufferer of migraines the lighting and sun reflecting from the glass of the greenhouses triggered attacks, so it was suggested to me that I tried floristry instead. This led to a certain amount of teasing from my school friends, about me doing ‘a lady’s job.’
Even my career teacher at Hayle School said the same thing. I don’t think you’d be allowed to say that now! When it was time for my work experience I managed to get a placement in a shop called Jefferys Florist in Penzance. I really enjoyed the experience and decided that I really loved what being a florist entailed, I was bitten by the bug.

I started work at a local florist on a YTS placement and enrolled onto a course at Cornwall College. I was the only chap on the course but loved it and set out to prove my teachers and others that floristry is a profession for anyone.

With the encouragement of my college tutors and my own determination I started to enter competitions at the Society of Floristry and Spring Florist events. I began noticing different styles and quality of floristry and knew that I could better the standard of floristry available to people in Hayle and the surrounding areas of Cornwall. I wanted to do it properly, I can't stand shops that use old flowers or 'whatever is left' in funeral tributes, to me that's an insult!

So, I opened my shop Flowertime Florist on 18th September 1989 at the age of only 18. Whilst running the shop I continued studying, achieving the highest qualification in floristry in the UK, the National Diploma of the Society of Floristry. After receiving a scholarship from SoF I went on and passed the AIFD (American Institute of Floral Designers) qualifications and then was inducted into AIFD, the first florist from Cornwall to achieve this.

I was still competing in lots of competitions and really enjoyed meeting other florists from around the world. One of these achievements was coming 3rd in the Teleflower of the Year Competition, but the Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal was the crowning glory to my many wins.

I became a council member of the Society of Floristry and was always found helping at Spring Florists Events, later becoming compere for the debut designers, and then a Hall manager. It was at Spring Florist Event where I met Rebecca, now my wife, who had her own shop in Newbold Verdon. After a long-distance relationship Rebecca closed her shop and moved to Cornwall over 20 years ago, to be with me and help run Flowertime now Flowertime @ The Big Pink Tree.

I believe that you need proper formal training on the technical side of floristry to become a florist, offer the best quality flowers, great customer service and take pride in your work. I always say if I don't like it, it doesn't go out the shop.

We were asked to explain why we became a florist for National Florist Day,
from an early age I have always loved flowers and was forever picking them from the garden, a flower arranging evening class was advertised at my old primary school, I went along and loved it so much I knew that was what I wanted to do. I then did my work experience placement in a florist and they gave me a job as the Saturday girl when I was 14.

After leaving school I began as a YTS trainee, gaining my City and Guilds 1 & 2, my college tutor Rosie Hughes offered me a job at The World of Flowers and I was able to continue my training gaining my level 3 and ICSF whilst working for her.

In 1990 I started working at Spring Florist Event in the design room which I continued doing for 19 years, meeting so many wonderful florists who I have become great friends with.

I opened my own shop , Floral Creations in Newbold Verdon, a small village in Leicestershire in 1996 at the age of 24. With my one year old daughter Holly to look after and running the shop, it was a struggle!! My mum came and helped me and we juggled child care together, the two of them often found doing the deliveries!

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work and exhibit at Chelsea Flower Show for Teleflorist ,Society of Floristry and Flowertime obtaining many medals .

After Mark and I got together in 2002 at Spring Florist Event a long distance relationship began separating us by 300 miles! With 2 shops to run, it was difficult. After a brief discussion (who doesn’t want to live by the sea!!) we decided that I’d move and we’d try working together!! Luckily it worked out and that’s what we’ve been doing for the last 21 years. The shop, Flowertime @ The Big Pink Tree has grown immensely over that time and has become well known by locals as the place for to go for all their floral creations as well as a gift shop selling beautiful products by other local artists.

I am delighted to have been chosen as one of the 2024 100 faces of floristry, and am proud to call myself a florist and love belonging to such a wonderful profession.
