It’s the end of the October week here (October fortnight if we’re being real) so I’m talking ranunculus over on stories.

I start pre sprout at the beginning of the hols so they could get on getting on while the girls were off. Now I’m getting them hardened off and prepping beds ready to plant. I’ll do some in the tunnel and some outside.

The fear of them all being dug up and eaten or something else terrible is real so I’m taking my time trying to come up with the safest possible space for them. But in a few different places so if the worst happens not all is lost. The olde hedgeth thee beteths.

Fingers crossed all goes to plan and they’re happy until April 2024 because look at them. A to die for glamour bloom.

Morning!

The farm is still producing (albeit slowly and soggily) beautiful autumnal tones, the leaves outside my windows are so rich and warm it means only one thing - pumpkin soup and cozy jumpers. The chill in the air lets me know it’s time to tidy up and mulch. A warm blanket of compost and leaves will be layered over my beds and around the perennial plants to tuck them in for the cold weather coming alongside fleecy low tunnels.

I’ve had a week or so of calm, the floods have slowed me and it feels very right for the time of year. But there’s still lots to do…

I’ve received a *small* delivery of 5,000 tulips (which won’t get planted until next month) and I’ve got about 100 extra campanula seedlings that need bed space - I’ll need make a new bed in the greenhouse and plant them up! Still lots of beds to be cleared and yes, I’m still sowing seeds.

Happy crunchy leaf season 🍂🍂🍂

Good morning wonderful flowery friends!!

Here I am in the tunnel (the only dry place at the moment) with my Steve Zissou hat looking towards 2024 and all the fresh opportunities for blooms it will offer :) Autumn is definitely here in my section of the world and bringing a reminder to change gears.

My floral offerings are booked out until the end of my season (yay) so my books are officially closed for fresh flowers 2023!

There’s still lots of flowers hanging in through this brutal weather so it’s not over yet but I’ve started clearing the beds of plants that have become unproductive to make way for little plants, bulbs or corms to take their place and grow over winter.

I’m also waiting on a mega massive delivery of ranunculus and anemones arriving next week that will fill the rest of the space in the tunnel and beds outside. I already can’t wait to get them in the ground, wonderful little weird octopus delights! I’ve missed them, just a quick 7 months to wait for them to bloom now :)

Romantic pink dahlias on this grey morning. They seem to glow with a soft focus in the gloom. I’m out cutting before this yellow rain warning hits us - the delicate blooms and the fluffy ones wouldn’t like it at all. All the dahlias, any roses in bud, carnations and scabious will get cut and brought in to keep them safe :) I think most of the rudbeckia will be fine but any larger flowers, I’ll cut.

It’s a batten the hatches day after this - boiled eggs then a big family dinner later. The best kind of rainy day!

This weeks posies are out in the farm shop 🥳

Limited amount of bunches this week as things start to slow down production wise on the farm. The wet and grey weather has really done a number on the blooms this September. I’m starting to clear beds to make way for next years crops, ranunculus will be going in soon and the hardy annuals will need to get kicked out of their nice warm spots to toughen up a bit before winter kicks in.

But posies are out out - I love making them, I get to use all the one off stems that I can’t really include in the big florists orders, special, unique ingredients :)

Happy Friday ya’ll 💞

Lots of beauties away to fulfil their flowery destiny today! Autumnal tones, dark vibes and burnt oranges clashing with big frilly pink dahlias. It all makes me want to go and eat pumpkin soup with a giant wooly cardigan on. But I’m here in the rain deadheading mushy carnations and scabious 😆

It’s still my happy place!

After two days off I’m back to the world’s most magical place, my little flower farm nestled in

It was so stormy last night, wind and rain battering our windows, waking me up with worried thoughts about my flowers. Lots of my cosmos at home have fallen and snapped. Fingers crossed everything along here is ok 🤞🏼

Lots to do today, plant more seedlings, new roses to go in the tunnel, getting rid of my poor zinnias (botrytis has won), picking for orders, cutting back sweetpeas and, as always, tackling the prize winning weeds :) Feeling fresh and ready to go on this blustery autumnal day 🥳

It’s my birthday today! 🥳🥳 Here’s me celebrating this morning with two giant striped Emory Paul dahls (which look suspiciously like cafe au lait royal..)

Lots of beauts fresh cut and away over to for Denise and her amazing team to whip up a storm. Speaking of which, a storm was forecast for today. Feels about right!

Cheers gang! 🥳

Ah the flowers…. A warming bunch to mark the beginning of September. A mix of dahlias, roses, apple mint, cosmos, snaps, phlox and Sanguisorba.

The pink fluffy Sanguisorba has been a hit for me and the bees, it’s got a heady, honey scent and I have to be carefully cutting it as it’s always completely covered in hoverflies and bees. They follow me and my bucket of cut blooms like I’m some sort of flowery
pied piper. It’s the little things 😆

Well, it’s been a flowery week - lots of florists orders, my (now weekly 🥳) mixed flower bucket delivery to and of course my own creations in the farm shop which will be out later today.

Autumn is definitely here on the west coast of scotland, the leaves are turning and there’s a darkness and chill in the air when I get up to cut the flowers. Dahlias reign supreme for me at this time of year, helped along with rudbeckia and the joy of amaranth and didiscus coming through in the tunnel.

It’s been all go and I’ve burnt the girls porridge while making this post so that pretty much sums up where I’m at at this stage of the growing season :)

Happy September everyone 💞

Morning flowery people!!!

Dahlias and roses, a dreamy blend. My roses have been so beautiful, I’ve added some and decided not to grow certain ones. Trying to find the perfect mix, one of my favourite tasks.

The dahlias have been a full time job on their own at the moment, removing the bottom leaves, disbudding to ensure the biggest and most incredible bloom (I’ll post a video of this in stories) fighting off everything that likes to eat them (which seems to be everything) and making sure they’re fed. My other babies :)

Happy Thursday ya’ll 💞

I’ve been out cutting this morning for a few different things, mixed buckets for florists, my bunches for the farm shop and DIY events. The blooms coming through are so beautiful, ethereal and luxurious.

Starry Astrantia, incurved asters, lustrous dahlias, soft grasses and many other things in between. A midweek boost.

Now they will rest in fresh water, in the cool of my studio until they’re fully hydrated and ready to be sorted and off they go to fill homes with joy and mark love filled occasions. What a beautiful thought.

Autumnal tones coming through now thanks to this completely beautiful rudbeckia mix. The end of summer vibes don’t feel so bad when looking at these warming colours.

The girls are back at school/nursery next week, I can’t believe how quickly it’s flown by. My first summer flower farming and our first taste of a school summer holiday has been an experience for sure, a wonderful blur. Now the rudbeckia and dahlias are here I feel the seasons change and the field slow down a bit, some beds resting and waiting to be filled with ranunculus. A mix of not wanting it to end for winter and the excitement to do it all over but better next year.

I’ve been planning for next year for a while, biennials were sown in June/July and next up is hardy annuals towards the end of the month. Zoikes.

I was away on an overnight anniversary celebration yesterday (yay us) and back out to my flowers this morning and they’re just the best!!!! Just looking at them lightens my whole being.

The dahlias have been so slow this year, lots of plants are still really small but I’m so thankful for the ones producing flowers right now. Totally gorgeous wonders, mixed with China asters and annual phlox they’re a romantic tale from long ago. Transportational if you ask me. And no, that’s not a real word.

Ps - thank you Scotland for the insane lighting changes just minutes apart while taking these photos :)

It’s my husbands birthday today - Happy Birthday truly the best guy I know 🎈🥳🎈

I think this is his present from the flower world (not sure he was quite as delighted as me….🤷🏻‍♀️) - it popped open today and it’s already my new favourite.

A cross between Cosmos astrosanguineus and dahlia it’s got the best of both, beautiful deep velvety petals, rich center and strongly scented of dark chocolate, all on gorgeous long strong stems 😭 perfect!

Is this too many of essentially the same photo? I don’t think so… 🫶🏼

It’s a driech Sunday, in fact it’s been a whole lot of ‘driech’ recently here on the West coast.

So, this week the first of my beloved dahlias bloomed. I’ve been waiting sooooo long (I know creme de cassis bloomed already but it was too short to use so this is the official, official first cut!!!) Here it is stealing the show in this bouquet made for the lovely Kim who came to visit me yesterday. A bouquet of stored up sunshine 🥰

I can’t wait for the dahls to come into full swing, I think if I had to chose a favourite flower it’d be the great Dahlia. I LOVE them. Brought to us by the Romans who used the tubers as food stored like potatoes (anyone tried it??) and used by the Mayan people to store water in the stems, they’ve stood the test of time. A flower that’s gorgeous and edible AND you can keep a handy libation in the stem? That’s my kind of flower.

In this bouquet - (spoiler it’s everything)

Dahlia ‘white onesta’
Larkspur ‘misty lavender’
Achillea ‘summer pastels’ ‘love parade’ ‘the pearl’
Allium sphaerochephalon
Poppy seed heads
Antirrhinum
Physostegia
Persicaria
Pineapple mint
Hordeum jubatum
Polemonium
Gladioli byzantinus

Bug friendly flowers.

Today I’ve been out weeding, feeding and dis-budding the dahlias while pretending to be cool every time I saw an earwig. Trying to find that beastie sweet spot in this pesticide free zone. Earwigs eat the dahlias (OMG) but they also eat the aphids. All balance.

Fuzzy bees always a bit more welcome though.

Me with Flowers in London. 2023

I woke up this morning in our hotel, my first thought before I even opened my eyes was ‘I need to seaweed feed the sweet peas’ 🤣 She’s obsessed.

This rose… something super dreamy and romantic about the muddy vintage brown colouring coming through the red. Everyone said, ‘you don’t see the true colour from a photo’ so I got it for myself and hey, it’s true, way more gorgeous irl.

Anyone passing by the flower farm asks me about it, I even had emails from people that bought posies saying ‘I got this rose… I can’t quite describe the colour but I need to know the variety’

I’ve *mostly* been deadheading while it bulks up but these few were cut last week from the first flush of blooms, paired here with annual Phlox ‘Cherry Caramel’ and an incredible Antirrhinum that has bronze running through it, I think maybe from Monarch mixed seed or Terra ruffled giants.
An ode to Rose ‘Hot Chocolate’

Monday morning work table in the studio

My sewing machines are calling to me from behind all the flowers in here!! Anyone else feeling a weird mix of being at max capacity but also the desire to do a million things all at once!!?

At the moment I’m working lots in the field - so much is new to me this year it’s all encompassing (in the most amazing way, I like for my mind to be busy). Plants are still being planted, amaranth going in to the poly, extra zinnias and cosmos being slotted in to any spaces that appear, there’s bug patrol, sowing biennial seed for next year, pinching out over excited annuals, feeding and picking as much as possible all the while being 10000000% distracted by pretty flowers all around.

But I’m still like, let’s build four stone d**e supporting walls in the garden, maybe we could dig a giant pond, I want to start cooking every meal outside over a wood fire and I’m definitely going make flower crowns for the girls to wear every day during summer hols 😬

Some bunches from this week, a selection of what’s available now . I’m learning so much from the garden and feeling more relaxed and experimental with my floral design work. It’s exciting working with my own blooms grown from tiny seed months ago when it was cold and dark. A brief from nature.

It’s been so gloriously busy along at the farm and in my own garden, the beds are so productive with lots of beautiful little stems coming through. I’m joyously cutting armfuls every day now (and that’s just the sweet peas...) - the snaps have started and the annual phlox, larkspur in the tunnel with outside plantings hopefully ready this week.

*whispers* There’s a few dahlia buds too

The roses are gearing up to bloom again after good feed and ladybirds have arrived to help much aphids. Leaf cutter bees are carefully cutting up the rose leaves leaving wonderful little pieces of art. I’ll pop a photo in stories.

It’s sunny and rainy today with great bursts of wind, a day to make you feel alive! I’m off to put a big dress on and get blown around - happy Saturday everyone 🫶🏼

A super romantic mix from yesterday with added edge from Allium ‘Art’ and some wonderful Silene plus those roses.. just so beautiful. Each week I’m in love with something completely new.

I work with the seasons so each week brings new flowers, new colours. I’m not the person to come to for mass produced high volume, although I do try to grow as productively as I can in my space.

I’m here for the details and to elevate your floral design work with weird and wonderful highlights that are not as readily available.

It was a pleasure to see Helen (a friend from a shared fashion studio space in Glasgow years ago) yesterday and give her this bucket to play with, I’m already loving her creations over at .studio 💞
