River People at Rievaulx Abbey - Friday 29 Nov - 6-8pm!

Re-discover the Rye through the eyes of those who have interacted with it over time. Interweaving conversations with communities who live, or have lived by the riverside with historic scenes from the river’s rich past Helena Fox’s new audio-visual drama production is a love letter to the Rye. From the Great Helmsley Flood of 1754 to the experiences of local Young Farmers, River People: Re-discovering the Rye asks what we can do to preserve the precious Rye catchment and landscape for future generations? ✨☺️

But the magical puppet with no strings catches the eye of the evil showman Stromboli who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the enchanted toy. With the help of Dame Mamma Mia and her hapless son Lampwick from the local pizzeria, will Pinocchio learn in time what it takes to be a 'real boy'? So excited to welcome Mishka Rushdie Momen - Pianist to HAC Sun 17 Nov, 2.30pm!
https://helmsleyarts.co.uk/whats-on/mishka-rushdie-momen
Hailed as “one of the most thoughtful and sensitive of British pianists” (The Times), Mishka Rushdie Momen captivates audiences with her refined and expressive playing.

Mishka’s wide repertoire focuses on Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann, whilst reaching back to Gibbons and Rameau. Committed to performing new music, Mishka has commissioned works by Nico Muhly and Vijay Iyer, and premiered An Inviting Object by Héloïse Werner at the Lucerne Summer Festival in 2022.

“Mishka Rushdie Momen plays the piano extraordinarily well, but it is the purity and depth of her musical feeling that impress me most. She has the rare ability to communicate the essential meaning of whatever she plays.”

Other Live Productions - How To Be Brave - A true story is coming to HAC next week - Fri 8 November, 7.30pm!
https://helmsleyarts.co.uk/whats-on/other-live-productions-how-to-be-brave-a-true-story

In 1943 Colin Armitage’s ship was torpedoed in the South Atlantic. He scrambled aboard a life raft. 50 days later HMS Rapid rescued him.

Colin was the grandfather of Louise Beech. 64 years after his ordeal Louise’s daughter, Katy, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. In order to distract her during insulin injections Louise began to tell the story of Colin’s bravery and determination to survive.
The story inspiring Katy to be brave in the face of her diabetes is a true one. She has said that Grandad Colin’s experience made her determined to carry on when she wanted to give up and die: If Grandad Colin can survive an ordeal like that, I can do anything. I can do these injections. And she has never faltered.

This Sunday we welcome two-time, back-to-back Grammy nominee, multi instrumentalist Guy Davis - American Roots Artist!
https://helmsleyarts.co.uk/whats-on/guy-davis
“… one of the most gifted acoustic musicians on the planet” Blues Blast Magazine.
“…a superb songwriter whose lyrics evoke the storytelling poetic tradition of the blues” The Country Blues Magazine

Musician, actor, author, songwriter, so much more that just a bluesman, a troubadour of the folk tradition, and a master of his craft. Guy uses a blend of Roots, Blues, Folk, Rock, Rap, Spoken Word, and World Music to comment on and address the frustrations of social injustice, touching on historical events, and common life struggles.

His background in theatre is pronounced through the lyrical storytelling of his songs. His storytelling is sometimes painful, deep, and real, an earthy contrast to modern-day commercial music, meant to create thought, underlined by gentle tones from his guitar or banjo fingerpicking.

Equally at ease with six or twelve string guitar, five string banjo, harmonica, and even the didgeridoo, Guy’s work has seen him perform alongside Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, Dr John, Taj Mahal and Joss Stone, opening for Chuck Berry, Joan Armatrading, and BB King, and perform all over the globe.

Adventures that once saw him chased out of Red Square in Moscow for trying to sing, performing in the then Soviet occupied East Berlin, and in front of an iceberg in Greenland! His shows feature a mixture of his own original material alongside classic cover songs from such luminaries as Muddy Water, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bob Dylan.

One of Guy's more well-known songs, originally by Mississippi Fred McDowell and available on Guy's 2002 'Give in Kind' album.
