Where did the bell tower go!? 🔔

Helston's amazing museum, Museum of Cornish Life uncovered this coloured postcard of published by L. Tozer & Co which dates from around 1908. We were shocked to see a bell tower (is that what it is?) on top of the roof! Does anyone know when it was removed or do you remember it yourself? We want to know more and we'd love to one day put it back up there - doesn't it look splendid?

Today we brought & to Year 9 & Year 10 drama students at Helston Community College. Creating a space for young people aged 14-25 to come together and share their thoughts and advice on a starting a career in the arts in the South West felt very special - and important.

Thank you to everyone that helped to make this event happen.

We’ll be making lots more events for young people happen over the coming months and years. Lots of plans are a foot!!

The glamour of opening a new venue never ends! Today’s task: clearing out the gutters (and weeding the front… again). Job done ✅

Our little chapel is starting to look much more loved 🥰 Thanks to everyone who has been getting involved to turn our space into something special. We’re comin’ on!

Inspired by the attempted Wild Camping Ban on Dartmoor and the 𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠, this episodic play explores the reaction to the loss of spaces through snapshots of various people’s lives.

What a weekend! 🙏 Meur ras/thank you to the 300+ of you who came along to our Welcome Weekend at Helston Old Cemetery Chapel! 🤩

We are overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm people have shown for our project to repurpose the chapel into a space for creative arts & community projects.

From offers of help to provide meals for visiting actors to a huge amount of interest in joining our community programming board; from people wanting to start storytelling & improv groups to artists offering exhibitions; from the gorgeous storytelling & folk music of Tam Lin Retold to the comic & poignant show, Chippy and; from the inspiring launch of our first project, Stories of Helston to giving away many, many delicious scones - this weekend is one we won't ever forget.

Now the adventure really begins... 😁

Ok so we know everyone is quite rightly focused on big hats and whistles & bells for a certain day in Helston only 4 days away right now (!) but it’s also only 9 days until our event celebrating Frida Kahlo at Helston Old Cemetery Chapel (that’s the 13th). So we’re just checking that’s in your diary too! 🗓️

We thought we would share with you one of our favourite reasons for thinking Frida Kahlo rocks…

Frida often bravely challenged gender roles - dressing in male clothing and embracing her own beauty norms, celebrating her unibrow and moustache.

And we think that is fabulous! 🌈

On Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May we are flinging open the doors of Helston Old Cemetery Chapel for our 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝 to say hello, good to see you and come on in. We’re going to have shows, free cream teas, an exhibition about Helston and lots of ways to find out more and get involved.

After a long process of tender applications, waiting and negotiating we have been granted a 30-year lease on a disused chapel in Helston to reimagine into "𝑎 𝑤𝑒𝑙𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝 ℎ𝑖𝑔ℎ-𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑠."

As a home for the newly created Trevow Helston CIC this space will not just allow us to programme existing challenging, groundbreaking, conversation-starting work for the communities in and around the town but to make a safe space for artists and makers to experiment, explore and play together. Performances, screenings, workshops, rehearsals, filming, photoshoots, exhibitions... - we want it all.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us and been on the journey with us so far. The building needs work (like new windows and some toilets...) but as a flexible, 100-seater (or seat-free) the aim is to keep the overheads low so that we can easily throw open the doors and say, "Come on in and play!" to as many people as possible.

Today we're looking back at our most recent event, 𝐴 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑎𝑠 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑙 which we hosted at St Michael's Church just before Christmas. What a fabulously festive event! Were you there? Thank you to everyone who came along, we had a lot of fun.

We are warm and cosy and (almost) ready to welcome our audience at St Michael’s Church this afternoon for 𝑨 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒍 by the 𝐊𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬. 🎄

In case word hasn’t got out on the Helston grapevine, we were not able to go ahead with the planned evening performance today and so the ONLY performance of Tama Matheson’s show will be at 2.30pm.

🎻 A solo show performed by international actor-director Tama Matheson, this spellbinding stage adaptation will be accompanied by a 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑙𝑒 performing the much-loved music of J.S. Bach and other classical greats.

⛪ 𝐖𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞? ⚔️

What an incredible evening we had last Friday as we "popped-up" at the 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐥. We love this building that has stood empty and disused for five years before we welcomed What Now Productions, 𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑀𝑒 𝑂𝑧. What a way to bring a building back to life!

We hope the success of this sold-out event will emphasise to Cornwall Council how this space could be repurposed into a live events venue for Helston. Our application to lease the building is in... we find out by the end of December 🤞🏽. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our journey so far. Onward!
