Have you ever wondered how to get a flat top when baking your cake? 🤔
Maybe domed tops don't concern you, and certainly there is nothing wrong with them. However, If you plan to cover your cake with fondant, especially if you want to get sharp edges, you will need a flat top.
There are a couple of ways to achieve this... you could turn you oven down to 140C and cook for longer. Additionally, the use of a baking belt will result in a flatter, if not completely flat top.
The baking belt is a strip of heat resistant fabric, soaked in water and secured around the cake tin. If you don't have a baking belt to hand, it is very simple to make one using wet paper towel and tin foil. Click on the link below to see how this is done, but please remember when using this method, keep an eye on your oven! If the baking belt isn't soaked correctly or is left in the oven too long, it could ignite... that said, it's never happened to me 🤞.
If all else fails, immediately on removing your baked cake from the oven, use a bread knife to carefully level your cake, using the top of the tin as a guide.
Happy baking! 😍
