📢 A Message from Monkey Bizzness 🐒💙

We recently saw a post from our friends over at Mace Playce, and we couldn’t agree more with what they shared. The reality of running a small, family-oriented soft play business is tough, and recent challenges have made it even harder.

Our rent has doubled – yes, a 100% increase – which means our rates have risen too. After the recent budget, it’s predicted that 1/3 of hospitality and leisure businesses could close. This is a serious concern for us and many other small businesses that love being here for your families.

Like Mace Playce, we aren’t “raking it in.” Sure, it might seem busy on a rainy Saturday in winter, but for much of the year, especially during summer, we barely cover the cost of staying open. Rising energy prices, wage increases, and supply costs are real pressures, and we’re doing our best to keep things affordable while still providing a clean, safe, and fun place for your little ones.

To those who support us week in and week out – thank you. We’re here because of you, and we want to continue being here for your families. So please, keep us in mind when planning a day out, as every visit truly makes a difference. 💙

I overheard a couple of customers talking last week and their comment really bothered me, perhaps more than it should….

‘Soft play is so expensive now, these guys must be raking it in.’

Soft play is expensive - I agree. We have 5 children between us between 4-8 years old so are well aware of how expensive almost everything seems to be these days. Unfortunately, we’ve been left with little choice to try and make ends meet. We’re well aware our soft play frame itself is not the best, however we hope that our extra daily activities and our jam-packed events are able to more than justify the cost of your visit. We are still much cheaper than other local ‘attractions’ and allow you stay as long as you wish unless we literally have queues to come in.

The recent budget is a big worry for small businesses like ours. The increase in wages as well as our national insurance contribution will make things even tougher. Add to that of course the astronomical rise in our energy costs over the last few years.

Things are only going to get more difficult for our little family business.

Are we raking it in? No.

I think it’s easy to make that assumption when you visit us on a rainy Saturday during winter. However, please remember we are very much a seasonal business. These busy days simply make up for the summer months when we’re twiddling our thumbs praying that a customer will walk through the door. Some businesses are greedy - that’s not us. We’ve always believed that by keeping our costs as low as we can, it means we will continue to have regular visitors rather than those that only come a few times a year. I think this is evident by many of you that we see on a weekly basis (at least!) and the hundreds of you with annual passes.

Amazingly, we’ve been open 11 years this month, and we still strive to maintain the high standards we set ourselves on that very first day - providing a safe, clean and fun environment for you and your families to create memories. This will never stop!

So many small businesses aren’t going to survive the next 12 months as the profit margin is getting smaller and smaller. Don’t let us be a part of that statistic.
