Set in 35 acres of beautiful Hampshire countryside, Highfield Park is a truly stunning 17th century mansion for any confererence or wedding.
The Village of Heckfield β the name derives from the Saxon βHigh Veldβ β can be traced back to the time of the roman occupation of Britain. At the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror gave land around Heckfield to the de Port family who founded the present Highfield Church in 1169, and it seems that there was an earlier Saxon church and neighbouring house on the site.
Highfield Park, which has been the manor house of Heckfield for centuries, was known as Heckfield Park until 1819 when a rival house Heckfield Place, bought up most of the surrounding land and a re-arrangement of names was agreed.
The present Highfield Park is of the Queen Anne and Georgian periods and its cellars and foundations show signs of an earlier building. Since 1819, it has formed part of the Duke of Wellingtonβs Stratfield Saye Estate which was presented to the Duke by the British people. Neville Chamberlain, one time Prime Minister of Britain retired to Highfield Park after his resignation in 1939 and lived there until his death. Since then, successive tenants have lived at Highfield Park until April 1982, the last of whom was a film producer; and many famous names including Mohammed Ali, Richard Harris and others have stayed at Highfield Park. Several signed photographs are displayed at The New Inn at Heckfield.
